No i mean in which dorms do most parties occur? are there specific places where the parties happen or is it just spread out ? "seriously withdrawing"- I liked Rice over UT (just felt good there and everyone seemed my type) but ive never considered UT.

Dude, I'm not sure what part of Rice you saw, but there is certainly drinking and drug use going on there. The fight song has the words "Stand and cheer, drink more beer". Like the other posters said, unless you're going to BYU, there's gonna be drinking.

Everyone who has the chance to live in the Honors quad should without hesitation choose it. It is awesome on all aspects. The quad is extremely social. You get to know a lot of people just from living here. If ever I wanna go eat and don't wanna call someone I just walk out into the quad and usually find someone I know to go with me. Yet on the flip side the quad is designed to accomodate studying. Each building has a lobby, plus there is the Joynes Reading Room and Blanton Attic. The quad is the perfect place for a freshman to live and it was one of the best decisions I ever made!

is Duren typically for african americans?

No

10 charac

wait you don't have to be honors to live in honors dorm?

No, it's just not a guaranteed spot.

Which dorms by the stadium are better to live in as a freshman? One that is quiet but still sociable at the same time? (excluding Jester)

I might as well add in my two cents:

I'm a freshman and currently, I live in Duren. Duren is a newer dorm and I'm pleased to say that it is absolutely beautiful. However, it's a bit inconvenient because most of my friends live in Jester and many of my classes are in the center of campus. Plus, it's a bit of a hassle having to walk all the way home when it's late and the buses aren't running and the PCL and Gregory Gym are about a 12-15 minute walk away. However, Duren is right across the street from Kinsolving, which in my opinion has the best food on campus and I don't care what anyone says otherwise.

If you want to live closer to your classes and student facilities, my advise would be to stay in either Jester, Moore Hill, or San Jacinto. If you want the same amenities as Duren, then I would recommend San Jac. Jester does NOT smell like **** and people definitely overexaggerate about the smell. You can't really smell anything and if you can, it's not like the smell is bad. It's a very social dorm and if you're an African American student that's looking to meet other African Americans, Jester is the perfect spot for you because it's basically the hub for black student life. You would also be in a very convenient location to the PCL, the stadium, Gregory, and many of your classes. San Jac and Moore Hill are also very convenient locations.

I'm not exactly an expert on any of the other dorms but that's the knowledge I've gained so far. Hope it helps a bit!

Thanks! This is a bit helpful.

Are any of the dorm rooms carpeted and what are the private baths in San Jacinto like?
Would I still be able to get in a dorm like San Jacinto if I chose to apply for housing after I made a decision in March because the deposit is nonrefundable and I am really not sure if I will be attending UT. Also, how are the honors dorms compared to San Jacinto? No private baths right?

The deposit is refundable if you choose not to attend UT by 1 May.

It is nonrefundable if you drop after that date or if you choose to stay somewhere else, like Towers.

And if you wait until March you will not be getting a room in San Jac.

None of the dorms are carpeted and the private baths at SJ or Duren are like a hotel bathroom but less nice. Plus you will have to clean them.

Actually I think it's nonrefundable, so I'm not sure if I should.

From the website:
To complete your housing application, you must submit your $50 non-refundable processing fee. If you apply online, you should be prepared to pay your fee using MasterCard, Discover or an electronic check.
The housing application fee is non-refundable, even if you are not admitted to the university or decide not to enroll.

With those bathrooms in San Jac and Duren, they may not be hotel nice, but they are certainly nice if you ask me. Well, they're as nice as a college dorm's private baths can be but only if you KEEP THEM CLEAN. The janitorial staff comes in like, once a semester to clean your bathroom, but otherwise, it's up to you and your roommate. And honestly, it's not that hard to do.

I'm pretty sure that none of the dorms are carpeted (but I believe that one of the older dorms has hardwood floors? I can't remember which, though).

I live in San Jac, and I'm sort of tucked away in the end of the hall (and my neighbors like to blast their music, etc). My classes are all by West Mall, so I usually have like a 10-15 minute walk to my classes. I really like it though.

Oh, and Jester might not necessarily smell like p*** but it definitely has a distinct smell in the hallways. (But I don't think the rooms smell as bad as the hallways.)

Anybody know more about The Castilian? Looking at the website, it looks fairly nice, but a lot of people have told me to not stay there and to just get an on-campus dorm.

I have heard a lot of negative things about Castillian, but this was 2 years ago and perhaps they've fixed the issues. Maybe someone more current can help.

I was wondering, what's wrong with the Simkins dorms? All the thread starter said was "Simkins: Don't live here."

I got accepted in October and I soon submitted my housing app and got a confirmation e mail and paid the $200 deposit. It never gave me a choice of which dorm I wanted though! Since I got my app in early does that mean that my spot is saved and regardless of what dorm i choose, I could have a good chance of getting the dorm I want?

I guess what I'm trying to ask, is does each dorm have its own waiting list, or is it one big list where everyone later puts in their preference and later will be assigned housing by how high up on the "master list" they are?

totally confusing, I know.. :D
