The Veggie Debate

Go Vegetarian :d

Go VEG.
YAY :D

I bought soy milk today. It was ... interesting. I haven't tried it with tea yet, but I'll probably do that tomorrow (it's what I usually use milk for). I actually hate most dairy, so it's not that I compare the two; I guess I just need to get used to the taste.

My parents don't call themselves vegetarians but they eat little or no meat. Thus being, I've been raised on a diet with hardly any meat, so really it wasn't a choice I made myself, but it's not one i go against either. Lots of people just don't like the taste of meat.

One other thing i thought was interesting was...I read somewhere that if a mother eats a lot of one thing while she is pregnant, the chances of that child being allergic to that one thing rises significantly, like peanuts or milk. Are there people out there allergic to beef or pork or chicken?

HUMAN BEINGS ARE DISGUSTING. PLEASE READ THIS CAREFULLY:

"Many sick and injured sheep, treated as mere cargo, are thrown overboard to the sharks or are ground up alive in mincing machines. "

AN ARTICLE ON AUSTRALIAN WOOL.

PETA launched the boycott late last year after the Australian government ignored repeated pleas to ban live sheep exports, in which thousands of sheep die each year, and to end “mulesing”, a crude mutilation in which farmers use gardening shears to cut large chunks of flesh from lambs’ hindquarters without any painkillers.

Prestigious US-based international retailer Abercrombie & Fitch has joined the boycott, and J.Crew, an $800 million company and London-based New Look, a $1 billion company, have announced that they and will not knowingly sell cruelly obtained Australian wool.

PETA is currently protesting another international retailer, Benetton, which continues to sell garments containing Australian wool.

When their wool is no longer needed, millions of sheep are shipped thousands of miles through all weather extremes, mired in their own waste aboard open-deck, multi-tiered death ships bound for the Middle East, where their throats are slit while they are fully conscious.

Many sick and injured sheep, treated as mere cargo, are thrown overboard to the sharks or are ground up alive in mincing machines.

Last year’s Cormo Express disaster captured international headlines as more than 5,000 sheep died at sea.

We do not need the blood of Australian sheep on our hands, but everyone who buys/sells Australian merino wool and its products is contributing to these horrific practices

Together, we can help put a stop to immeasurable suffering.

Worldwide, 70 Animals (cows, Buffaloes, Goat, Sheep And Pigs) Are Killed Every Second....every Second :(

REASONS TO GO VEG....

The Natural Resource Argument

•Litres of water necessary to produce 1 kilo of wheat: 209
•Litres of water necessary to produce 1 kilo of meat: 20,861
•Amount of water used by the average meat-eater in America compared to the average
vegetarian: 16 times as much

•Amount of land used to produce meat through intensive farming compared to the amount of
land necessary to produce vegetable food: 20 times as much

•Number of years the world’s known oil reserves would last if every human ate a meat-centred
diet: 13

•Number of years the world’s known oil reserves would last if human beings no longer ate meat: 260

The Ethical Argument

•Conditions animals live in on factory farms: dark, crowded buildings where they never
see the sun or breathe fresh air
•Animals are crammed into cages and stalls
so small that they can barely turn around. Egg-laying chickens are crowded as tightly as five
birds in a space no larger than that of a folded newspaper.
•Treatment of animals transported to slaughter by lorry: Goats and cows are routinely crowded
into lorries so tightly that they accidentally gouge each other with their horns or crush each
other when they collapse. Many animals sustain broken bones on the rocky road to slaughter.
•Treatment of animals transported by foot: Marched animals are often denied food and water.
Animals are beaten and have their tails broken to keep them moving.
•Condition in which animals arrive at the slaughterhouse: Some animals arrive dead or too sick
even to stand. Animals too sick to be fit for slaughter sometimes languish for days
before they are killed or die.
•How animals are slaughtered: Animals have their throats slit, sometimes with dull, rusty
knives. In some instances, goats, sheep and cows have their legs hacked off or are skinned
while still alive.

The Hunger Argument
•Number of people worldwide who will die as a result of malnutrition this year: 20 to 40 million
•Percentage of protein wasted by cycling grain through livestock: 90
•How frequently a child dies as a result of malnutrition: once every 2.3 seconds
•Kilos of potatoes that can be grown on 1 hectare of land: 22,417
•Kilos of meat that can be produced on 1 hectare of land: 185

The Survival Argument

•The diet of the most powerful animals on the planet, including gorillas, elephants and bulls:
pure vegetarian
•The life expectancy of vegetarians compared to nonvegetarians: Vegetarians live, on average,
six extra years.

The Cancer Prevention Argument

•The single greatest factor causing the epidemic of cancer, according to the U.S. National
Research Council: diet

•Foods that are linked with a higher risk of cancer: meat, eggs, milk and milk products

•Food constituents that help protect against cancer: dietary fiber, beta carotene, vitamin C and vitamin E

•The foods in which these cancer-fighting nutrients are principally found: whole grains, pulses, fruits and dark green and yellow vegetables

becoming vegetarian/vegan is a good way to stay thin. and it's also a plus not to kill animals.

[/quote]

yeah many people with eating disorders seem to become vegan/vegetarian.

The Healthy Heart Argument

•Results of latest research into the effect of diet on heart disease: Diet and lifestyle changes alone can prevent heart disease.

•The food constituents that are most commonly linked with heart disease: fat and cholesterol

•Foods that are high in fat and cholesterol: meat, eggs, milk and milk products

•Amount of cholesterol found in fruits, vegetables, grains and pulses: none

•The only diet proven to help reverse heart disease: a pure vegetarian diet

a_ravin I admire your effort but arnet you just a little idealistic?

The Fitness Argument

•Optimal diet for fitness training as documented in medical studies: a high-carbohydrate diet which optimizes storage of carbohydrates in the body, thus fuelling the body for exercise and supporting performance in both the endurance and the strength of the athlete

•Optimal sources of carbohydrates: whole grains, fruits and vegetables

•A diet which relies on animal products for protein increases the risk of the following diseases: osteoporosis, certain cancers and kidney disease

•Optimal source of protein: whole grains, vegetables and pulses

"a_ravin I admire your effort but arnet you just a little idealistic?'

idealistic. go to peta's website and see the pics of animals being skinned alive, steeped in pools of blood...you'll change. trust me.

The reason people die of malnutrition is not because there is a lack of food worldwide it is because farmers throw out much of their crop production in order to keep prices high. It all comes back to money.

Potatoes cannot be grown everywhere, livestock can unless the climate is terrible.

the fat and protein content in meat is more desireable than the high starch content in potatoes.

and and and do u guys know....at KFC...the chickens have their beaks sliced of with hot blades...while they are still alive...:( i just saw a photograph :(

i know no one is reading this...i am apparently carrying on a monolouge but ...at least i am trying

i'm reading :)

Of course I have seen those pictures, but im sorry thats the cost of mass production. A lot of what we enjoy on an everyday basis for low prices is because of policies such as those. Are they humane? hell no. But we sacrafice animals to meet human demand, its a way of life.

Now humans have killed animals for food since our existence, if its the process of how we kill them now that you are upset about, then simply dont buy the regular eggs and regular meat, buy the more expensive free roaming options that they have available now.

You are acting as if noone has seen the PETA pictures. Im sorry but thats how every activist group gains attention - putting the most emotionally engaging pictures up that support their cause.

Im not saying that this isnt a noble idea, im saying that it will never work.
