everybody....noticed? not only are we the Penn Class of 2010, we are also the 125th Wharton Class....nice numbers (2010, 125), eh? lol...

My name is Andrew. I play the drums, basketball, and like to skateboard. No real business background, just highly interested in the field, been wanting Wharton/Penn since middle school, so this is a dream come true and I can't wait to meet all you guys. I wanna be a doctor of some sort. Some of you intimidate me haha, am I the only one here without substantial business experience?

Dear Incomers,

Take it from someone who was there- most of you prospective finance majors will be sucked into the attraction of investment banking from Day 1 in the freshman halls and most of you will not be off it by your departure May 2010.

Then those of you who go will make a few tens of thousands more than others and then will want to stop doing investment banking because you get tired of working 100-hr weeks pretty quickly. A few of you will continue, but most will try to move to the buy-side (private equity/mutual funds/hedge funds). Pssst. The real thing to do is get into the buy-side right away from undergrad.

Or you can decide not to do finance and just love your job... I know I make less than the vast majority of my classmates, but I bet I'm happier than 95% of them :)

haha crescent22, youre so silly...

oooo yeah, any rd'ers from washington state????

I got into UPenn as well! class of 2010, baby!!
anyways, i started a bulletin on myspace... yes, myspace is the devil for all those familiar with it.
But I just wanted to create a public bulletin that unites all of us together in hopes that we can get to know each other before college starts!
If you're interested, join the myspace group! it's easy.. just click on join group!

tm2000...i'm with you on the lack of business experience haha. just want to go into the field. my high school's pretty small don't have any business courses or anything. i guess we'll just have to hit the ground running to catch up with the rests of these guys when we get to campus in the fall haha.

deffered and got in.

don't let them in on the truth let them go for the gold at the bottom of the cliff... don't up the competition for people who don't want ibanking (I read Money Business..... SCARY)

How would you suggest people get into buy-side out of Wharton? Would it be difficult? I already do investing/portfolio simulations on marketocracy.com and read a lot of investing stuff/play around with Forex.

any advice?

Just be dedicated to it and look for it. If you act like a lemming, you will be drawn into the banks making presentations and serving shrimp at receptions. Know the names of the big mutual funds/hedge funds/private equity houses and eventually you will find an "in"- someone who can direct your resume to the right person.

"Just be dedicated to it and look for it."

It's not that simple. OCR is actually a tougher process for internships than you would initially imagine. It's hard enough getting interviews for the banks which offer upwards of 10 spots for their summer internship programs. How much harder do you think it is to land an interview at those coveted Buyside spots?

Hedge Funds are probably a tad easier to secure, as places like Bain Capital, Citadel, etc all recruit out of Wharton. In terms of Private Equity, though... the only real big name is Blackstone, and they take maybe 1 or 2 every year for that practice. You'd be working the same hours as banking at BStone anyway, though.

Kids, don't worry if you have no business background... I came outta high school wanting to be a doctor, but ended up at Wharton (can't believe high schoolers actually do internships and crap for H&R Block nowadays). For the most part, if you got in, you should be able to catch on fairly quickly. The competition is tough, but if you find the right group of friends, you won't see other people sabotaging your work.

Come here, learn as much as you can, have as much fun as you can, and ball on fools when you get out of college. It'll be good.

now its back to work for me...
