I’m a future applicant to Boston University with a strong interest in musical theater (but I won’t be a major, obviously, seeing as how there isn’t one…). I would really like to participate in mt while I’m there - how is it up there? What opportunities are there in the city itself?? Thanks.

My daughter will be a theater major at BU in the fall. The theater scene is great and BU has a reputation as one of the strongest theater programs in the country. BU is directly associated with several local theaters and a professional theater company and there are numerous other professional companies throughout the city. Emerson also has an extensive theater and musical theater department. Also there are groups specifically for non-theater majors that put on shows at BU that you might want to check out. I believe the musical theater "club" just did Footloose. Here is a link. http://people.bu.edu/onbrdway/

I can't say I know much about theatre in general, but, in addition to on-campus groups, I would check around Emerson (as caromom mentioned). There's always a lot going on in the threatre district (where Emerson is located), so I'm sure there's a lot for you to get involved in. I would also possibly look across the river in Cambridge.

If you are serious about getting involved in off-campus groups, I would recommend that you poke around craigslist and theatre message board before you come here. Even email/speak to professors and local performers--try to set up appointments to meet with people when you come up here. People are usually surprisingly friendly. As with any art, most of your opportunities come from knowing the right people at the right time.

Good luck!
