Hi everyone. I'm a little confused on the way theater works at NYU - I know that Tisch is its own school, but is there a theater major within the College of Arts and Sciences? Also, if I go to CAS and major in something else, would I have the option of taking any theater-related classes? Please fill me in... thanks!

If you want to major in drama (theatre), you have to apply and audition to Tisch. CAS does not have a drama major. You can double major or take a minor in another subject in CAS if you're enrolled in Tisch but you can't do it the other way around. The only Tisch classes which would be available to you if you're in CAS are the few that they offer in the open arts curriculum which are not the same as those that majors take. I'm not a student there (yet!) but have done a lot of research and visited so feel free to PM me if you'd like more information. :)

True, you can major in Tisch's theatre program and minor at CAS. If you're not interested in doing a conservatory program though, the program I am in at Steinhardt (Education) is educational theatre, and it is much more comprehensive than Tisch's solely acting program. I'm pretty sure you can double-major in Steinhardt and CAS, whereas you can only minor in CAS with a major in Tisch.

If you're interested in educational theatre (you do get teacher certification but a lot of the alumni have gone other ways than just teaching), feel free to talk to me.

babyelite, you can double major in CAS if you're in Tisch, not just have a CAS minor.

ashley, it really depends what the individual wants to study and what path they plan to take. Tisch's drama program is a performance-based program which prepares individuals for professional careers in theatre. Steinhardt's program is an educational theatre program which prepares you to teach theatre at the high school level. The level at which you want to study drama is really the deciding factor here. If your main focus is in another subject but you just want to take a few theatre-related classes for interest, then being in CAS and taking the open arts curriculum classes would probably be fine. If you want to study drama seriously, with the option of a second major, or a minor, in CAS, then look at Tisch. If you're interested in teaching theatre someday, then have a look at Steinhardt. Reading their websites and seeing the sample courses of study should give you a good idea of what you'd be studying in each.
