Theory: Being a bay area asian male raises a lot of eyebrows when you try to "skirt" the college system

It’s really too bad what happened to this incredibly high achieving young man. He should have gotten in anyplace, for any major he desired.

Nah he was the best of the best in that field. he had one of a kind awards + 3500 impact npo, etc

For example, CS majors won’t get in w/o USACO plat + level ECs. Environmental studies people can do simple ■■■■ in contrast

Ok ? so here are two profiles, equal level accomplishment

Asian male + cs
Asian male + environmental studies.

Who has a better chance

Why do people, in chance me posts, in any post mention “ORM in OR major”. Even when referencing schools that “”""""""""“don’t accept by major”""""""""""""" (aka brown, stanford, jhu, uchicago)

im too frustraated to come up with any secondary explanation. It was very clear why he didn’t apply cs for top schools and applied cs to safeties.

Huh? I put quotes to say that it is bull****. Do you think that asian males in CS have just as easy time to brown harvard stanford jhu as asian males in liberal arts?

nO IM NOT talking about those kinds of colleges that accept by major and lock u in there. I am talking about UChicagom brown stanford jhu harvard those schools that u can switch at.

Frankly, I’m a little tired of the whole “Woe is me. I only got into Berkeley, Caltech and Penn” franchise of which this thread is only the latest iteration. Add the not so subtle racism (“no Asians can ever be interested in environmental studies”) plus the fact that you are not even writing about yourself but some other “dude” who may or may not feel aggrieved by the whole situation, and you are probably guilty of all sorts of TOA violations.

That’s what I think.

And maybe that was his problem. His application didn’t make sense to the adcoms.

Oh, honey.

But you do not actually have facts, just your interpretation of the visible outcome. It seems “very clear” to you because of your view that college admissions is especially unfair to people like you:

You are what- 17?- so it’s not unreasonable that your world view is so parochial. Spend some time on CC & you will discover many other constituencies to whom it is “very clear” that they are being especially/unfairly disadvantaged in the college admissions process.

There are substantial flaws in your logic, because you are analyzing the outcomes with an a priori assumption. To you, UCB or UPenn would be preferable to CalTech. IME, many students who want MIT (which rejected your friend), would see CalTech as a much better choice than UPenn or UCB. Change the lens, see a different world.

tl;dr, your ‘theory’ is flawed and more importantly unhelpful. If you are an “exceptional bay area asian male” interested in CS, focus on finding schools that fit you - the famous schools are not as interchangeable as you seem to think, and there are more variables than ethnicity, home city and academic interest considered in the application process. Get to work on figuring out how to balance out your own application.

I’m trying to figure out what you want out of this thread. Advice? Perspective? Or is it just an opportunity for others to agree with you?

im a jiunior

ok the dude was interested in the subject but he immidiately switch to cs at caltech. that says something. he couldnt do that at berkely or penn

Perspective

Ok I would pick Caltech over UPenn tbh. But MET over caltech, a 0.5% acceptance rate with a small, strong, alumni network. The only reason to go to a good college is for that reason. However he got into civil engineering, and is not guaranteed to go into cs. It is obvious why he chose caltech .

I still don’t see a real problem to be solved or a question being asked. This phantom friend of yours seems perfectly happy with his outcomes. If I’m wrong, he needs to create his own account and ask a question in his own words.

i honestly dont give a flying *** about that guy. I care about my outcomes, and I am planning the same aproach, but worse ECs and no awards. I am now neurotic that it will land up even worse then me. Good news is that he only applied to 7 top schools, why my parents and I plan on shotgunning 15 and the rest of our safeties and matches will be covered by the single UC application.

So what is your question (and think seriously about editing your subject line to make it less confusing?)

You seem like a level headed young person with great self awareness and sense of propriety. Should work out well for you.

Good luck!
