The ones I actually did

On Campus

RISD Activities
¤ Make friends with a RISD student.
¤ Actually enter a RISD building and see a studio (dark room for me)
¤ Attend a RISD party (definitely felt like I was in a whole different world).

I actually thought it would be way less when I started. Some good stuff on the list, definitely some overrated stuff though too.

Staying up and going to Loui’s is really not special for many CS people…a couple of us started the tradition of going to Subway if we were up at 7 AM instead.

I’m doing a 5 am Loui’s in 4 hours. At the Rock now, will be here until I get kicked out and have to go to Sci Li.

The majority of those weren’t even an option when I went to Brown! I don’t think the libraries were open all night – although I did stay up all night playing the Trivia Contest, which doesn’t happen anymore.

Ones I’ve done in my lifetime:

¤ Attend a Brown play or musical.

RISD Activities

hahahaha, love the pacman at the GCB comment

Obviously some things on that list are out of date/not available (Smith not there etc)
Disclaimer, those lists are not mine, and some of the things I’ve done at reunions, so might be considered cheating.

I’ve:
¤ Do an all-day Ratty sit (from opening to close) (I worked, not sat, from open to close. back then the non workers were kicked out between meals.)
¤ Stay overnight at the SciLi. (or at least open to close, it wasn’t open 24hrs back then.)
¤ Stay up all night and eat at Loui’s when it opens at 5am. (and the Silver Diner at 3 am for blueberry muffins.)
¤ Go to a midnight showing of Improvidence.
¤ Attend a Brown play or musical.
¤ Take Engine 9. (okay, I took ENG 6. and TA’d it. I think that counts. and my student took ENG 9.)
¤ Sneak into the Keeney attic.
¤ Date a Freshman. (although I don’t think it really counts, I was a freshman too.)
¤ Have sex on the 13th floor of the SciLi. Well, not the 13th floor, think it was the 9th.
¤ Explore the tunnels under Keeney. and Wriston, and regularly used the ones between Andrews and VW.
¤ Ride to the top of the SciLi and take a picture of Providence from
its highest point.

street vendors).

¤ Walked through the Thayer Street Bus Tunnel.
¤ Take the glass elevator in the Biltmore.
¤ Go to Newport Beach.
¤ Go to the Roger Williams Park Zoo. (first time was as part of a bio class!)

make sure to take note (better yet, take a picture!) of the giant
pineapples hanging at the end of Atwells Ave.
¤ Watch a movie at the Cable Car during one of the nights when the
guitar player is performing before the movie starts
¤ Go to Loui’s at 5am.
¤ Take a trip to Boston, New York, or Cape Cod.(while I was an undergrad.)
¤ Visit the RISD Art Museum.
¤ Make friends with a RISD student.(actually don’t know if this one counts. It was a Brown student who belonged at RISD and transferred there.)

From the Med School article:

  1. Go back in time. Take in a movie at the Rustic Drive-In on Route 146.
  2. Stand under the heated vent outside the Biomed Center in winter, breathe deep, and contemplate the anatomy lab below.
  3. Visit the Anne S.K. Brown Collection of 6,000 miniature lead soldiers on the third floor of the John Hay Library.
  4. Recover childhood memories. Sled down the hill at Moses Brown School. (although there is a better sledding hill near Brown. But promised my student I wouldn’t give it away until after they graduate.)
  5. Give yourself a day of tranquility. Hop on the ferry to Block Island, with its lighthouses, bluffs, rolling roads, winding paths, and 17 miles of pristine beaches.
  6. Ride the waves at Narragansett Beach.
Some of these are redundant, of course.

I would also add:
*Broadcast on BRU (or other Brown radio) (I do miss the all night trivia contest. One of those things the internet killed.)

  • dance a square dance or ballroom dance in Sayles hall.
  • learn to make a pizza working at the Gate. (I learned to actually toss a crust.)
*Get to know a Brown union level worker to at least where you are on a first name basis both ways.
*Eat in one of the restaurants on Federal Hill, Cranston etc where you overhear, watch mob business being conducted (or at least imagine you do.)

But the bread’s only good starting at 8am, as we’ve realized.
