this guy basically insulted me today

he asked me where i was going for college.i said FSU;he was like "FSU?only people that don't get into UF go there.Go to a community college then transfer to UF".i was like "NO".Then again,he was a UF alumni,so i guess it was reasonable.

dont take it personal...FSU isnt a bad school...hey at least your not at arkansas-pine bluff

Both FSU and UF are excellent schools. Most students who are shopping for colleges choose one over the other. It all depends on one's personal preferences. If you're happy with your choice, that's all that matters at the end of the day!

TK

you really shouldn't pay any mind to it. FSU is a really fine university. There are kids who get into both and choose to go to FSU. there are some kids who could get into UF and don't even apply.

As long as you feel FSU is the right place for you, then that's all you should care about. UF is a really good school as well, but its not for all people.

My statistics are at or above the standards to get into UF...but you could not PAY me to go there (hence why I'm not even bothering with the application). The school is just not a fit for me in nearly any aspect (according to the Princeton Review, it's one of the two "Good Match" schools academically for me in Florida and FSU is a "Safety," but FSU is really getting selective as to who they let enter the school and its ranking should reflect this in the proximal future).

If you want to go to FSU then so be it. You don't have to go to a "community school" and transfer to UF. You can tell this "guy" that FSU is rising in the school rankings, becoming just as selective as UF, and is a wonderful school with great specific programs.

You can also tell him that he's just jealous... you want to go to a school in the state capital, while he went to a school in a swamp. ;-)

TK - don't let that bother you!

My daughter only applied to FSU and UNC Chapel Hill. She got in out of state to UNC CH and was offered schol money, but decided to go to FSU because she loved the school, the area, and it felt more like home than Chapel Hill. We have some friends who went to UNC CH as in state and were blown away that our daughter got in OOS. They were shocked when she decided on FSU, but even they understood that you can't get a great education if you feel uncomfortable where you are.

She didn't even consider UF. It is a great school just like most state schools, but it just isn't for everyone.

There will be snotty people wherever you go and you can't let them determine what works best for you.

Good luck and GO NOLES!

Both my daughters chose FSU over UF. One even applied to UF and was accepted, but still selected Florida State.

For some reason people from UF just feel the need to constantly berate people at FSU. I guess it is some old rivalry thing but why don't they just be happy where they are and stop worrying about what FSU students are doing. The students at FSU are very happy with their choice so go about your business and tell those haters to get lost.

the whole uf crap is getting old, best decision i ever made was to go to fsu.

cybermom is so right - like ---UF dont be hatin.
that guy who said this to tomato king must be sooooooooo insecure, he should get over himself already...

That is lame. But let me just say, please don't let it color your view of UF students as a whole. While most jokingly make fun of FSU, I know very few UF students who truly believe FSU is a bad school, and even fewer who so sorely lack tact that they would say it to the face of a 'Nole.
Both schools are awesome...if I had wanted to stay in state, I most likely would've selected FSU over UF. But most UF kids are cool, despite this bad experience.

This rivalry is not new. Study the full history of FSU and UF and you'll see why.

However, between actual FSU and UF graduates it is almost always mutual respect. The reason is that graduates from one frequently attend the other or have family that go to both, like in my family.

The worst fans are generally those who never attended either university.

Do I know that I go to the better school? Yes.

Would I make fun of an FSU student for it? No.

But I still know it.

Some programs at FSU are far more competitive than those at UF. In fact, FSU has some programs - film comes to mind - that do not even exist at UF. The theatre and music programs at FSU are considered to be much stronger than those at UF. The musical theatre program is one of the tops in the entire nation and is very hard to get into. FSU normally takes no more than 6 guys and 6 girls into the freshman class each year. My D turned down a spot at Penn State and several other schools to go to FSU because FSU was the best fit for her. Not being from Florida, the UF - FSU rivalry seems kind of silly to me. I would hope that students choose their schools based on the strength of the program they are interested in and fit, not how the guy down the street ranks the school.

There are many programs at FSU that are better than at UF. We've had this discussion - extensively - before. Because of this diversity of excellence it would be hard to classify one as "better" than the other, unless you compare like programs.

UF is generally regarded as the better school all-around, but that's primarily due to its dominance in a couple of key academic areas. For instance, UF has traditionally had higher-ranked programs in the glamorous academic departments such as business, engineering, medicine, etc. FSU on the other hand has its roots in being a liberal arts school. Over time it has developed top-notch programs in theater, music, arts, etc. However, since the USNews, Princeton Review, etc. generally place more weight on professional disciplines such as business and engineering, UF always receives higher overall rankings. Factor in higher endowments than FSU's and you've got yourself a substantial margin in rankings.

What does this all prove? Nothing. You go to the school that fits you best for your future career choice. FSU's programs are some of the most competitive in the nation. UF has superior programs in several areas but it only means anything unless you plan on entering those academic fields. For a while, FSU was undoubtedly on a lower plane but in recent years it has become increasingly competitive and its freshman admit stats are becoming more and more impressive while UF's profile is slowly regressing to the mean. I really think the gap is shrinking and eventually just about any student at either school will be a cross-admit to the other.

^Excellent analysis. ;)

Except - as a 150+ year old school FSU was regarded as the better academic school up until perhaps the 1980s. An example of this is the fact that FSU has the Alpha chapter of Phi Beta Kappa and UF has the Beta chapter. However, some of this is due to FSU's long standing heritage as a liberal arts university whereas UF is an "ag" school. FSU attracted more female students as a result, who tended to have better grades and test scores than the males who wanted to be farmers.

Practically speaking the students were indistinguishable.

A decent history of FSU may be found in the FSU entry on Wikipedia.

Well UF & FSU are great universities. Clearly FSU is a better option than say: UCF & USF. Anyone who thinks otherwise is foolish.

"UF's profile is slowly regressing to the mean"

Seems rather Populist, I think what is really transpiring is that FSU and UCF are getting that much better. Think about it, UF only has room for 6,500 FTIC students for each incoming class. This ultimately means that their is a large number of students with 3.5+ GPAs and 1200+ SAT's who are not getting admitted into UF, and therefore are choosing between FSU and UCF. And of course some are choosing FSU because they want to study Liberal Arts, Film, or Meterology.

Did you guys realize that the state is projected to reach 28 million residents within the next 20 years? This ultimately means that the competition to get into UF, FSU, UCF, and USF is going to get ridiculous. It's inevitable UF & FSU are going to become like Berkeley & UCLA in that we will be admitting less than 20% of all applicants. Scary!

--According to the US Cenus Projections

By 2030, Florida will have gained over 12 million total residents:

http://www.census.gov/population/projections/SummaryTabA1.pdf

UF increased its rankings by buying National Merit Finalists----they just recently stopped giving as much $$ to the NMF and thus are having less enroll. They will regress in the rankings because of this and FSU would rise if they chased the NMF's as aggressively UF previously did.
FSU is a fine school and the person you ran into probably was thinking he was being funny---upset you chose FSU over his alma mater.
