I know this is probably one of those common knowledge types of questions, but I'm confused on something and I was hoping to get some clarification.

If a school on the common app asks for teach recommendations, does this mean that the teachers need to fill out the Common App form for teacher evaluations AND write a physical letter? Or does this just mean the they need to complete the teacher evaluation and submit that?

For example, Duke (on the common app) says on their website:

"We require three letters of recommendation for each applicant: one recommendation from your guidance counselor and two recommendations from teachers"

Does this mean the Common App form, AND the classic "dear blank, sincerely blank" type of letter?

I know this might be a really silly question but I just want to make sure I know what required of my recommenders!

If you go to the common app and click on view forms, you can see exactly what the form is the teachers and your counselor will be filling out. You can print it out. I believe there are places for your teacher/counselor to write a little paragraph about you.

I do not believe teachers are to send anything extra if Duke is a common app school. Non common app schools often have their own forms but will accept the recs from the common app if printed and mailed.

If your teacher decides to do it all online then that’s what they’ll have to do, there is a space where the teacher can upload their letter of recommendation or they can also write it straight into the box. If they choose to do it on paper they’ll need to print out the forms and you’ll have to provide them with mailing labels. Don’t worry it wasn’t silly question :)

Haha thank you both! So essentially, my teachers are still writing a formal letter, but the process of sending it is built in to the common app system?

Yes. They either enter your common app through the email you sent, do it online inside the common app to be sent to each school you apply to or if it is your school’s policy to snail mail everything then you must supply stamped addressed envelopes and the teacher prints them out or hand writes on those printed forms from the forms section.

At our HS the teachers did the common ap rec and sent it to the schools on line. However, our counselors had the teachers give them a copy of the rec so they could send them in an envelope along with the other school papers. This saved all those extra mailing envelopes. Ask your counselor how your school does it.
