Thurgood Marshall College Honors Program

I have a few questions about this program. One of the requirements is to have a “high school gpa of 3.8 and above”. Is this UC gpa, total gpa, academic gpa??? Which one? And do second semester senior year grades factor into the gpa calculation? Will we get invited right around Fall when we begin classes?

BUMP

Not sure about GPA but you get invited right when you register for classes in august

@DoctorP Oh ok, so I guess they do factor in second semester grades, since we have to turn in our transcripts around July.

I was looking at past threads and some students said they were notified of Honors acceptance in March/April. Maybe it has changed now; I’m not sure.

Also, I was looking at the criteria for the program, and if I’m not mistaken, you can still become a part of the program after your first quarter at UCSD, if you earn a certain GPA. Not sure though…

@wormholes Yeah, I heard you have to get a 3.8 though, which is pretty hard to do in college (a lot easier to get in high school). I would rather not miss out on the first quarter, but we’ll see.

@JuicyMango Yeah. I’m not in Marshall college, but the college I’m in has a similar honors thing as well. It doesn’t seem like there are many (if any) benefits to it. No priority registration, smaller classes, or anything…

@wormholes it’s a seminar more than anything. You get to talk to a fair amount of distinguished professors and see parts of campus that you otherwise wouldn’t. I took it fall quarter of freshman year and we got to visit the StarCAVE (3D VR room) in Atkinson Hall, tour the San Diego Supercomputer Center, and play with the Cognionics dry EEG headset at their lab. It’s just kind of neat and not a huge time commitment to hang out with reasonably smart people

@DoctorP Oh ok, thank you!! Does the honors show up on your transcript or anything? I’m not sure if I’ll get it…it depends on which GPA they’ll be using haha…but if I don’t get it as an entering freshman I’m hoping to get it after my first quarter at UCSD. Thanks so much for your help!

It’s true that if you get a high enough GPA (3.8, I believe)you can later get invited into the College Honors Program.
