Thurgood Marshall

Like the Warren College thread, I haven't seen much talk about Thurgood Marshall.
Who else was admitted here? Talk about yourself! I'd love to know my future dorm mates. :)

Also, current TMC students, what's good about our college?
I was trying to look for some pros and cons about the college, but like I said, there isn't much talk about TMC. Any tips for us?

Heya :] I was admitted to Marshall too! I’m a general bio major. Haha I was looking for Marshall threads as well and haven’t seen many. Most of the descriptions are usually like “Marshall has good food. OVT is awesome. GEs are okay.” At least the little I’ve heard has been positive!

Yes, please tell us more about Marshall
How are the dorms?

Hahaha. I’m so glad someone replied to this thread. :')
I was almost afraid that I was the only going to Marshall.

I asked Clarkfobes some questions about dorms and TMC in general.
This is what I gathered:
“the dining hall (Oceanview Terrace) is the favorite of most people and they have pretty good GE’s and they hold Marshallpalooza (carnival event)!!!”

“I’m not a Marshall Student, but I will tell you what I know. The res halls have many floors with suites in them. The suites are single-sex so there are never co-ed dorms/suite. However, the floors are co-ed so there will be guy and girl suites on the same floor. They are really close to OVT too and theres a good study lounge right below it, but there is always some guy playing piano in there when you try to study at night!!
If you like being by yourself and having some privacy, I would suggest a single, but if you are down to meet new people and pay less, you should a triple. The flaws of a triple are that you have roommates who may have different study/sleeping habits and there may be conflicts. You also need to set guidelines like who is bringing the microwave, fridge, etc. The triples may be a bit crowded as well, but if you get along with your roommates then it’s all good. If you submit the housing form now, you might even be able to get a double!
Unique qualities … umm they finally won the Unolympics finally last year! lol Btw, unolypmics is a competition between all the colleges where freshmen have to dance and compete in various activities. Um…hard to party there because they have an RA schedule and they actually stick to it. Got caught a few times… so don’t party there lol. O yeah, they have Goodys which is a good burrito places (like Chipotle) thats open until 1am so its a good midnight snack place. There’s also a market down there. Also, extremely close to RIMAC arena (gym and recreational purposes).”

Definitely positive! I’m pretty proud to be in Marshall. I’m Undeclared Social Science right now, but when I get in I’ll declare my major as political science. Are you going to apply for a triple or single? Or one of the rare doubles?

Marshall is awesome. Dorms are old-ish but not the worst by any means. FOOD IS AMAZING for dining hall standards. By far the best one on campus IMO. GE’s are completely manageable. If I had to choose a college outside of ERC I’d pick Marshall.

The GEs are easy (in my opinion), OVT is fantastic, Goody’s is great, yay.

Haha yeah Marshall seems pretty awesome. I wonder why people rarely talk about it? I haven’t really heard any complaints.

Hmm I dunno I’m hoping to get a double :] Its the traditional dorm format and I kinda expected it to be like that instead of triples. Double seems ideal because it allows you to meet someone new without it being too crowded. Single is the next best I guess because you’ll have a bunch of room & privacy, but you won’t have a roomie to bond with. Triple seems like a bit much with 2 roomies though. What is your top choice? Did you send in the housing request already? I read that you should apply asap even if you’re not going to ucsd for sure.

Someone correct me if I’m wrong, but I believe there are no doubles available at Marshall. Or, very very few.

Midnight: I sent in my housing request already (yesterday, when the admits were sent out). I want a double or single, but I’m most likely going to get a single because in most suites there are 4 singles and 2 triples.

Ucsandiego915: You’re right. There aren’t many. This is from the TMC website:

“There are 12 random Double Rooms in the TMC Residence Halls. There are a series of pipes that cause 12 rooms to have lower ceilings than all other rooms by nearly 2 feet in these rooms. Therefore, these rooms do not comfortably hold people sleeping in lofts or bunks and are therefore double rooms instead of triples. These rooms are: O 606, O 607, P 606, P 607, Q 506, Q 507, R 406, R 407, U 206, U 207, V 206, and V 207. Closets in these rooms are at least 6 square feet, ceilings are 8’7” tall, and beds are between 13 and 23 inches off of the ground. The room dimensions are 10’10" by 9’4"."

A triple is pretty much a double.

how hard is it to get a single?

just wondering

^Well if you’re already on the housing list, you should get one for sure.

From what I can tell, you have a fairly good chance of getting a single.
There are 4 singles per suite, and 2 triples. Somewhere in the lot, there are a few doubles too.

@objection: I hope we both get doubles! We have a pretty good chance right? Btw are you female or male? If female we might be future roomies :]

These forums are making me more excited about college now!

How many suites are there per floor?

Well they say because we sent in the housing application so early, we’re probably going to get a good chance at getting the rooms we want. I’m female, so maybe! :D

Yea, I love forums. I joined mostly to learn more about student life as well as to make friends beforehand.

As for how many suites per floor? I’m not sure. :\ Oh well. I’m visiting with my class on March 22, and I’m going to Admit day so I’ll get answers then!

I’m in marshall too :D

Okay so question, when you submitted the housing application, did you specify your preferences about wanting a triple or single anywhere on the app? i didnt see a place to do that :/

is anyone going to the freshman admit day? :)

housing app doesnt require any of that, as far as i know.
the housing contract later will have alll of the preferances and everything.

And it answer your freshmen admit day question, yep! I’m going to admit day. :)

I guess we’ll all meet each other on Admit Day at the Marshall College session! I’m so excited!

i wont… its too far for me to go just for admit day :[

New2UCSD, are you OOS? I live about six hours away in central California, my parents surprised me with a three-day, two-night trip to San Diego over Spring Break, leaving on the evening of Admit Day.

I’d be welcome to exchange Facebook/phone information with anyone enter UCSD as a freshman this fall, especially if you’re in Marshall College!
