I had a couple questions about sports at UVA. At orientation, they told us that students had no trouble getting into football games, but that not everyone could get basketball tickets. Can anyone tell me about that process? Also, do students have access to any sort of guest tickets to football games?
Thanks in advance

As far as I am aware, every sport except basketball is free with your ID. No guest tickets (again, as far as I am aware).

Basketball runs on a lottery, but I’ve never done it, so someone else will have to clarify how that works.

Students are guaranteed their first ticket to a basketball game. Subsequent tickets are awarded on a lottery. Attending any other UVA sporting event increases yours odds.

So does anyone know how likely you are to get the tickets from the lottery?

As EW wrote, the more support you give to other sports (I believe you’ll swipe your card when you attend games), the higher your chances are of getting into basketball games via the lottery.

Ok so you can get into any event by showing your ID at the gates except basketball. Baseball is getting popular so you might need to get there early, and football as long as you get there before kickoff you are fine.

With basketball you have a certain amount of points. You can get these points in the Fall by joining the Hoo Crew and going to specified soccer and volleyball games in the fall. The more points you have, the more entries you get in the lottery. If you get a basketball ticket and go to a game you get another point for each game you go to. If you get a basketball ticket and don’t cancel your ticket and dont go before the game starts you lose points.

Don’t worry about not getting into a basketball, unless VT, Duke, or UNC is in town we don’t even come close to selling out the student section unfortunately. But the sooner you are picked in the lottery the sooner you can enter and the better seats you get. So if you want good seats, accumulate points, if you dont care about seats, unless its a big game (rarely) you will get a ticket.

I went to like 3 games in the fall that got me points and went to every mens basketball game and got to enter in the first grouping every game (and that was my first year)
