Tigertown Bound!

@rab15482328 Don’t worry. It’s early yet. Most decisions come in Feb.

Thanks @carolinamom2boys! Yes, she did apply to Calhoun Honors. I don’t think she’ll hear about that until February. Is that correct?

@startingsoon That’s my understanding as well about notification dates. My son will be a CS major, but we sat in on an engineering info session and were quite impressed with the program. What impressed me the most is the program chair said that they only admit students that they believe will succeed in the program and that there are many resources available to make that happen.

In terms of housing, the new Honors dorms are under construction and supposed to done mid summer. If my son doesn’t get admitted to the honors program, he’s going to try and get into the RISE dorm, a living and learning community for science and engineering majors. Good luck to your daughter.

Your snail mail letter should have merit info included.

Starting to get a little nervous reading all of these posts… Son applied in September. Composite ACT of 30 (one sitting w/34 in math and 30 in English), 9 AP classes, GPA of 94.487. Class rank is not top 10% which is tough since the way the school system calculates GPA (out of 100, not on 4.0 scale) clusters so many kids together who have an “A” average. He is in the top 25%, but even the top 47% at his school all have GPA’s at 90 or above. He has amazing EC’s and his teacher sent in a fantastic letter of recommendation.

My concern is that he does not have a third year of a foreign language, and I know that is a recommendation for Clemson. Does anyone know of anybody who has been accepted who took only two years of a foreign language? He really liked Clemson when we visited and now I’m nervous for him…

I am a little confused. Daughter applied 11/18 and 11/29 for Honors College. We are out of state. She has 31 ACT and 3.8 unweighted GPA lots of honors/AP classes & ECs from all girls college prep HS. She read where she won’t be getting decision until Feb 15 So I am surprised and now a little nervous reading these admission and scholarship posts. I checked her application submission email and this is what it said:
“Notification schedule
Clemson has a single date notification schedule for freshman applicants and the “Priority Application Deadline” is December 1st.

Freshmen applicants who apply by December 1st and whose file is complete by mid-January will receive an admission decision the week of February 15th.”

Any thoughts on if she should be hearing something?

@catholicmom3 You should receive 2 notifications , one for admission to Clemson and a separate one for admission to the Honors College. What you are seeing on this thread now are admission to Clemson notifications. They begin notifying people in December if they are going to get a larger merit scholarship. Don’t worry yet. Based on what we were told at all of the info sessions we attended given by the Honors College, her ACT score may be a little low for admission , but that is not necessarily going to keep her out of The Honors program. 71% of the 2015 class scored at least 1400 on the SAT or 32 on the ACT, 2/3s of the students had a 3.7 GPA on a 4.0 scale. They told us that because everyone who applies is a high performing student with great stats, their essays and ECs are closely evaluated for the best fit for the program. Hope this helps. Good luck to your daughter.

@mre1991 The way that rank is calculated at your school is no different than on a 4.0 scale. Each system is calculated by GPA divided by number of students. There can be clusters of students in either system. In terms of his only having 2 years of a language, I would contact admissions directly to get your question answered. Our GC did not present 3 years of foreign language as a recommendation , but a requirement . Only the school can answer that question with any certainty . That being said, Clemson has become quite competitive for admission over the past several years, even for instate applicants . They had approx 21,000 applicants, admitted approx 10,500 and just under 4000 enrolled.

@carolinamom2boys Thanks for your reply. We are OOS. Our GC said nothing about applying to Clemson; he did it all on his own. We went by what was on Clemson’s admissions website where it was listed as a recommendation and stated that students with less than three years of a foreign language were still encouraged to apply. He is taking a second art course this year in order to meet the full year of fine arts requirement.

As for the class rank, I think that schools awarding only letter grades and calculating on a 4.0 scale translates very differently to class rank than schools issuing numeric grades and ranking on a scale of 100. Statistically it would be possible for the top 47% of his senor class to have a “4.0” average (straight-A’s) if they were calculated on that scale. I’ve even heard of schools who give every student with straight A’s a rank of “1”. Neighboring schools in the same district stopped issuing class rankings this year because of this same issue. I’m hoping by the time my freshman gets to go through this process he won’t have to deal with the same thing. One thing is for sure - he will take three years of world language!

@mre1991 In our school , letter grades are issued a numeric value with AP and Honors classes ranked higher. What my son faces is hundredths of a point separating him from the next highest students including Valedictorian and Salutatorian. It makes for a very stressful and competitive high school experience . For sure there doesn’t seem a good solution. We are instate for Clemson, and the GC mentioned the language requirements at a college readiness seminar we attended. She also told us that many instate students who would’ve been admitted to Clemson even a few years ago are now being deferred or offered the bridge to Clemson program because of the surge in applications. It’s crazy. We were fortunate that my son was offered provisional acceptance as a junior. Believe me, he feels very fortunate. Good luck to your son. What is his major? Clemson also admits to major and some are more competitive than others. I said up thread a little that I live about 45 mins from Clemson, if you have any other questions , is be happy to help if I can . I also have a freshman and it’s much easier to play the game when you know the rules.

I realize the Honors college is later but my question is why would her admissions notification email state she would be notified the week of Feb 14 if they are already sending out admittance and scholarships notifications in Dec?

@catholicmom3 Because that is the official date for notification given by Clemson, but they do occasionally send out notification earlier.

Also, housing is determined by application date, not acceptance date. People that are receiving their letters now have no advantage over your daughter. They may be receiving merit, which is why they’re getting earlier notifications.

@catholicmom3 What is your daughter’s major? Some majors are more competitive than others and take longer to respond .

@carolinamom2boys Business. Are the notices coming by email or snail mail?

Snail mail. That major is not one of the more competitive programs, so she should hear soon. My son had provisional acceptance as a junior and is instate and others received their notification before him. I really do think it’s random . Your daughter’s stats should be good for admission . Good luck.

Thanks so much for your insight. She is in at Villanova and deferred at BC but we are hopeful that Clemson will be a more affordable option. She has earned good merit scholarships so far from her safety schools but has her sights on her target schools. She is hopeful that Clemson will be in our budget.

@carolinamom2boys He put down Sports Communications as his first choice and business as a second choice. I don’t know how popular/competitive that major is compared to the more established programs at Clemson. He interned with the Athletic Director/depatment at school through the talented and gifted program, has worked with the Broadcast Video program at his school for the past three years and he’s played varsity sports all four years, so it really is right up his alley. Hopefully it all works out for him. Fingers crossed!

@mre1991 I don’t think that’s one of the more competitive majors. He’s certainly be busy. Clemson sports are on fire right now. Good luck.

Any in-staters know how/when we will be notified of or actual merit amount? Everyone I know that has gotten accepted so far has been given the same 9200-15000 a year range but no actual amount. I checked the iRoar account but there was no information on there either.

@Mauriciog I think that they may be waiting for Palmetto Fellows verification. Early notification happens in Dec.

I got my acceptance in the mail 12/18/15 to pre business major OOS with a $7500 scholarship, 4.2 W GPA, 3.74 UW GPA, 1980 SAT, public high school, only two years of Spanish, lots of ECs but not many leadership roles.
