Is anyone else applying for the Tisch high school program at NYU this year besides me? :)

Hello, this is my first posting to the site… and I am in the middle of helping my D fill out applications for Summer Programs in MT and Acting. Tisch is high on our list but we have a few questions. Maybe someone here can help. How do you know which of the studios you should apply for if you are interested in just getting there first and foremost? MT would be great but so would any of the other studios. Is there anyone on the forum that has been to the Tisch program? and of course, we are interested in other programs besides Tisch… any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

I posted this in another thread but since it is relevant I will add it here as well.

I had a long conversation with several folks at NYU yesterday and again with email today. Everyone has been very open and receptive to questions. So here is what I learned:

As far as the summer program:
- You must select one program on the app but in your personal statement you can add that you have a second choice if your first is unavailable.
- They began last summer (2012) a series of evening workshops that get each person in to see the other studios. Here is a quote from an email sent to me:
“That is, a student in ETW will have workshops (5-6 hours a week) in Meisner, Stonestreet, New Studio Acting and New Studio Musical Theatre.
We did this last year and it seemed to greatly assist the students in understanding the training the studios offer.”
I think this is great idea and makes me feel better about my D spending that time at Tisch… I was worried she might enter one studio then find she wished she had chosen another… and this would impact her decision to apply to Tisch.
Some other things about the summer program that might interest you: - The meal program is a minimum of ten meals a week at $540 total for the whole 4 wks but if you pay $880 you get 21 meals each week. You can grab a sandwhich from the cafeteria in the morning to eat at lunch because some of the studios are a bit of a walk. Stonestreet, e.g. is a little ways away while New Studio Acting and MT are on campus and Meisner is just a couple blocks away at 17th and 5th st.
- The New Studio Acting/MT studios are a new thing at NYU (maybe couple years old) as their old contract expired with the studio external to the campus.

Here are some things I learned about NYU in general:
- as far as Tisch vs Steinhardt… it is confusing… which one do you apply to? Well, they told me that Tisch leans heavier on acting while Steinhardt leans toward vocal training. It was explained that if you were a musician/vocalist and you wanted perhaps to teach someday then Steinhardt might be more for you, though they do get training in MT. I can imagine that if you asked this question of other students in Steinhardt that you might get a different answer as was given in a much older thread from 2003 by a young woman that decided Steinhardt was a better choice for her. You can search for that thread. But 2003 is a long time ago for a school like this as a lot can happen. I learned that Steinhardt has a summer program also but have not checked it out.
- I asked about the academic requirements for entering NYU and was told the average freshman has SAT scores of roughly between 630-750 on the Writing, Critical Reading and Math and the average unweighted GPA is 3.6.
- NYU uses the Common App so that is good. The Tisch school requires the supplement app as well and the two apps are seen and decided upon separately.

Hope this helps! Good luck and PM me if you have any other questions!

I’m applying for Filmmaking! About to press the send button eek!

My S is applying to Film program. Also applying to Emerson College summer program as well. Hopefully, he’ll get into one of them!

Awesome! I applying for Stonestreet Workshop! I sent in my application at the very beginning of January so I have been supper stressed for what feels like a while! Haha good luck with film!! One question: how long is y’all’s personal essay? Mine went well over the minimum requirement but I’m nervous it might be a little too lengthy.

Hello. I applied for the new studio summer program and I’m going out of my mind. I have average grades, lots of extra curricular activities and am a pretty good writer as far as the personal essays are concerned but the fact that they only except 16 kids is horrifying! is anyone as crazy about this as I am?

Hahaha yes, I can relate. It is a bit nerve racking, I am applying to stone street so I know the feeling. My grades are also the ONLY thing I don’t feel completely confident with. However, I’ve talked to many people that have already come out of this program and they say its not so much about the grades especially if you are only a sophomore. (Me) Its more of a creative program in the sense that things like your essays and creative r

S was accepted into Film program. He’s thrilled as that was his first choice.
KaitlynW and Kirby1996? I hope you got in!

I did! I’m so excited to meet everyone!

Anyone hear anything recently? Waitlisted, Accepted, Denied?

I know this is really late but I applied for the film program for this summer and I just received the notification email last week. I have been waitlisted. I really wanted to do this program and I’m really passionate about film. I’m hoping to get off the waitlist and accepted by mid/late March. However, the email said that waitlisted students will not have a chance to receive scholarships. I’m just wondering if you could tell me more about the program, did you know any students who were on the waitlist. Is it worth the $10k? And, are you still in touch with some of the other students from the program Because even if I do get in, I don’t know if I would be able to afford it. Do you think that if I do, and I email their special programs office, they would take my economic situation into consideration and possibly offer me a scholarship or a work studies program?
