Hello,
I know this is more of a college admissions type question, but since the parents here usually give such good and thoughtful advice, I figured I'd ask here.

I want to apply to Case Western EA, but I was wondering if it would be a better move to apply RD. The first factor is that the only time I'd be able to attend a CWRU info session (which they ask about on the app) is around Oct. 27, too late for EA apps. The other thing is my Gold Award. I know it won't be done in time for EA, but I'm pretty sure it will be more than ready for RD. The thing, I really want to apply EA just so I can know the results and so the second half of my senior year won't be that bad.

Academically, I'd say Case is a match for me.

When they ask about attending info session, is there a space where you can put your "intended date"? That might show interest just as well, or almost as well, as having been there already.

I don't know what the Gold Award is or how much you will need it to enhance your chances. (tell us more about it and when it happens, and maybe there's a way...). From the CEEB website, I see that overall admit rate is 71%, EA rate is 94%. Based on that, I'd say go ahead and do the EA so that you can have your "relax" result. Which I'm strongly in favor of.

If Case is indeed your first choice school, apply EA. You can mention your intended campus visit date. My S applied EA last fall, was accepted, and all was very happy and stressfree from late Dec on. He enjoyed the end of his senior year much more than those still waiting on RD decisions, etc.

Also, if you have really educated yourself about Case, I doubt you will gain any info on fall the campus visit that you cannot get in the spring during the "accepted students" weekends. My S and I found the spring visit much more realistic as to Case and the campus itself. Plus, you still will not have had to commit until after the visit.

jmmom,
The Gold Award is the the Girl Scout equivalent of the Eagle, only more difficult to get. Finished projects and paperwork have to be submitted by the 1st of the month to reviewed at that month's meeting. I'm pretty sure I get my final GA app submitted by November, meaning I could get a response around the middle of the month. If that doesn't fly, Dec. would always be an option. I know I can't get it in by Oct. 1, so any chances of putting it on an EA app. are out.

Wolf...
You can still mention the fact that are completing the GA requirements, and will have results at a later date. If you feel the need, you can submit supplemental info when you actually receive the GA.

The adcoms will understand the significance of the award and keep it in mind during the EA process. It is well worth mentioning on the application especially if you apply EA.

The Mom is right on the money: you're completing it, so go ahead and mention it!

In addition, applicants who are deferred to the RD pool from EA at most schools are given the opportunity to submit supplemental and new material to support their application. If you were by some chance not accepted EA but deferred for RD consideration, you could surely send your Gold Award information as supplemental material.

wolfpiper - The Mom and mootmom said just what I was thinking when I asked that question about the Gold award; just describe the status of where you are in obtaining it eg, "Completed xxx toward Gold Award; submitting xxx and yyy reports on 11/1,..."

Wolfpiper, from what you've said about your stats previously I don't think you'll have a problem being accepted to CWRU without your Gold Award.

Say that you expect the award this fall, and when you get the award, immediately send a follow-up letter or e-mail letting Case know you've gotten it.

Thanks for all the advice. Case doesn't have a pace for my intended inf section date, but I'll put that in the "Additional Info" section along with GA stuff, I guess.

Thanks for the vote of confidence, fireflyscout, but I don't know. Lacking the proverbial "hook," however, and given the selectivity of Case, I don't know.

It is very common for kids to send follow up information to schools during the space of time between submission of an application and the school's decision date. My son (who listed an anticipated accomplishment as pending, similar to your situaion, wolfpiper), actually sent two updates during the EA period, since several of his ec's had ongoing opportunities for recognition.

Can you pick up a Case info session nearby your house? Their adcoms do a lot of traveling. Maybe you could call their office and ask if they are doing any presentations near you. (It might be on their web site too, but I happen to think they have the worst web site.)

Also, if you are counting on a scholarship from Case, you should know that they do not notify you about scholarships until the regular time. For example, my son applied EA, got in, heard in December (I think) and then had to wait until April (I think) for the scholarship information! So it didn't help him that much to get an early admission notice. But, if you don't need a scholarship to go there you might as well apply EA.

Weenie - I beg to differ - CASE does include merit scholarship award with EA acceptance in late Dec. MY S did EA last year, was accepted, letter included scholarship award. Granted, you get another letter in April asking you to accept or decline award, but award notification came with acceptance letter in late Dec.

You know, Mom, after I got thinking about that, I was wondering if I confused it with Loyola Baltimore (the only other school he did EA at). Evidently I did! Thanks for the correction.

Wolfpiper - I pulled out the latest US News guide, and your ACT score is well above the 75th percentile for Case, you are in the top 5% of your class, and Case has a 66% acceptance rate. You also have a long list of strong ECs. I think the world would turn upside down if you were not accepted to Case.
