Well I am applying to Rice Ed and like 14 other schools lol.. but Cornell is one of those schools. I understand that it is a crapshoot, but do you think I am a viable candidate? Here's the profile!

*Spent all my time fresh. and soph. year working out and practicing for basketball, but I had to quit when I got a job as a junior b.c. we needed the extra money (my mom dated a conman who ran up tens of thousands of debt on her credit card).. worked 16 hrs. a week during the school year last year and 32 hours a week in the summer
will try to work this into my essay along with how my dad walked out on me at 11 and I've been morally supporting my mother like an adult ever since and how we had to go to a local charity and get free food for a little while and how I fell down three times in basketball tryouts and got up and made the team

So might I get into Cornell?
PREDICTIONS ENSUE!

That sounds tough; you have good stats and plus those problems that’s impressive and that could definitley make you stand out! Plus a sport and work expierience are good too.
While your AP scores arent the highest you have a good SAT score and if you could fit in what difficulties you have faced in life I’m sure you would get in! A lot of people who apply have those stats but nothing to seperate themselves from the crowd you do. Good luck!

LOL, it’s Saturday night, and some of us have lives. Fortunately for you, I apparently don’t!!

For Cornell – you’re top 5% of your class. This is what Cornell looks for.
Your SAT and ACT are consistent with each other and put you in Cornell’s range.
34 on the ACT would be better – but that’s because “more is always better” not because your curent scores will kill your chances.

Your life story should be helpful to you for admissions purposes, though I’m sorry you’ve had to go through it in this way. – Make sure you tell your interviewer. This is something s/he can stress.

Overall – You’re clearly good enough to get in. Probably middle of the pack for accepted candidates. Other than that it comes down to the numbers game and no one really knows how this works.

Good luck

Oh, FWIW, I think you have a good shot at Rice ED, so this may all be moot.

… How are my AP scores not good??
I got three 5’s and a 4?

And yeah, I don’t have what some may constitute as a life…
By that I mean that I don’t go out and get wasted every weekend
I have friends; I just don’t “party” haha

I wasn’t being critical of you – just sayin’ that Saturday night isn’t necessarily the best night to get responses.

APs – a couple of thoughts. For Cornell (or Rice), I don’ think that they stand out much either way. Almost everyone takes APs, and pretty much everyone does well on them. Not to downplay your accomplishment. Second thought – I’m not certain how much it makes a difference in any case. If Memory Serves, APs are ‘self reported’ on the Common App, but they don’t see your official scores. Without the official scores, I don’t know whether they’re even a part of the process. They are important for placement purposes.
