To bring / or not to bring

I think we have a good handle on most items for D to bring. However, in reading the Navy board it seems they are bringing a graphing calculator for the validating exams. Is that something D should bring? I don’t see it on any AFA list. I presume since it is not on the list, it should not be brought - but will they issue it for use on validation exams?

Compression shorts / undershirts is another items that the navy board implied may be okay to bring. The ones specifically designed with the moisture wicking fabric seem like a good idea. Where we live summers are reguarly 100-115 degrees and female athletes wear these of that wicking fabric underneath unforms to ward against prickly heat, chaffing etc… Since they are expensive, I’d hate to send D with them only to have them confistacated. Thoughts?

No, she won't need a calculator. They issue everyone a calculator.

I'm pretty sure you can bring those, but I'm not 100% certain. If they do get confiscated, she'll get them back as soon as Basic is over, and can use them then, but I'm almost certain you can have that stuff (as far as I know, undergarments such as that are pretty much the only thing you can bring as far as clothes go.)

You can actually bring a graphing calculator for validating some of the tests, not that I did, but you're allowed to. And as far as undergarments go, she should be able to get away with wearing them...I don't see why they would get confiscated. Even if they do, it's not like the hot weather goes away after basic. They could still be used.

Echoing others, it should be good.

Also though, I understand the heat stuff, coming from Houston I was used to over 100 degrees with at least 90% humidity. I came to USAFA, and even in full BDUs I was very comfortable in the dry weather and cooler (compared to home) weather.

If you think you have a decent chance of validating Calc 1 and/or 2 or you know that you'll be taking higher math (any kind of a tech major), a graphing calculator is a great investment. But the only reason to bring it to Basic is if you've already had Calc 1/2 (AB/BC) in high school and are sure you'll validate and take Calc 3 first semester. I did that, and I used my calculator right away.

Otherwise, your parents can just bring it Parents' Weekend.

The math validation practice test says no calculator or notes should be used during the practice exam. I would guess that the actual exam would be the same. I guess you guys know better than me, though.

What I mean is that if you validate Calc 1 and 2 and want to be a tech major, you'll take Calc 3 first semester, so it would be a good idea to bring a graphing calculator so you can use it for the year.

so no, the calculator cannot be used to validate, but it can be used during the ac year, or you can learn to use Matlab, which you will have to if you go past calc 3 anyway.
