I'm taking chem11 (general chemistry I) at SMC during the summer session now. It is definitely an easy class, however I was 1.5hr late for the midterm yesterday and didn't have enough time to finish it, so now I can only get a B for the class. I wanna to drop the class, but I already have 2 Ws on my transcript. Is 3 Ws gonna be too much or should I take the B? I have completed 41 units so far w/ 4.0 gpa and I'm applying to UCB eecs major next fall. Thank you!!!

Do you go to school on financial aid? If you go to school on financial aid, there is a very limited time frame for someone to bail out of a course. And, the odds are high you will owe money. So, if you are on financial aid, please double check with the fin aid office before you withdraw from any class.

Do you know for sure you will earn a B in the class at the end of the semester? I think a B looks better than a W. Too many W's look horrible on a transcript with regards to the addy office of a University.

Why were you late for the mid term? Do you think your professor would let you take the mid term over, if you were honest and polite about things?

I'm on financial aid but since I'm going to the community college, I don't have to pay for anything even if I decide to drop the course. I'm just glad that poor student like me don't have to worry too much about money.

I'm sure I can get a B in the class if I don't drop it. I have a 97% average before the midterm. I don't think getting a B is the end of the world, however I understand the competitiveness of transfering to EECS at berkeley. So having one B is significantly gonna hurt my chance of getting in.

I did talk with the professor but he said there's nothing he can do about it. I think it's my fault being late for the midterm so I didn't ask for an retake. After I messed up my midterm, I have to get 100% on all remaining exams for the class to get an A. So I simply asked him that if I can get 98% for all the exams which gives me a 89% at the end, would he be able to kindly give me an A... and he said "no"... which gives no hope of getting an A whatsoever, so I'm having a hard time deciding to drop the class or not.

who is ur teacher?

I thought the SMC drop date had passed...is yours an 8 week class?

the deadline to drop is 7/19 for the 6wks session if you have C or above...

O wow I am taking a 6 week class and the drop date has already passed. I have an A in the class too.

ooo I see thank you I just tried to drop it online.

why are you dropping it w/ an A?

O/P, there are no fin aid rules where you go to school? Where I live there are really strict rules about fin aid, it all goes by percents. Like, if you withdraw after 30% of the term, you pay 70% of the fin aid money for the class back. I really thought that was a nation wide rule.

Yes, most schools have the refund policy like that, however because I have a fee waiver for the california community college so I don't have to pay anything for the school except for the reduced parking permit fee.

I have another question about W on transcript. Once you have a W, is there any way you can get rid of it? Will taking the same class remove W from your transcript?
=)

The W would stay on the transcript even if you retake the class.

Is W better than C/D/F??

I think it depends on the situation. Most people would avoid getting a C and rather have a D or F because you can still retake the course without suffering ur gpa, however if you are already admitted into the school your transferring then you usually have to pass all your classes to prevent getting your admission revoked. Btw, most private schools care more about Ws than the public schools.

So that means when u get D or F u can retake the class and the D or F will not be on ur transcript instead the new grade will be on ur transcript??

D or F will still stay on the transcript, however only the new grade is used for gpa calculation. I know a few people in my last math class asked the professor to fail them if they get a C for the overall grade.

I know that at public, state schools, the at first you don't succeed try try again method is not frowned upon. As long as you do not do the "W" thing a great deal.
