To join a fraternity, how important is GPA?

I'm a second year in the E-school who transferred to UVa this past fall. I would like to get involved with the university community, so I've decided to rush this spring. Any insight on how important GPA is in the rushing process?

Unless things have really really changed in recent years, I believe GPA is irrelevant to pledging a social fraternity. The only issue is whether you feel you can maintain your grades with the additional time commitments and distractions of a fraternity.

Of course, there are also academic organizations (some of which have Greek names), where I imagine GPA would really matter.

Most, if not all, fraternities (and sororities) have a GPA minimum you must maintain to stay active in the org. I think the absolute base minimum is a 2.0, though some have a 2.5 minimum. The fraternity should list it on their info site

I guess I’m wrong. Here’s the official UVa fraternity webpage, which says most chapters have a minimum GPA. I’m guessing the national organizations care more about enforcing it than the chapters.
