To Send or Not to Send?...That is the Question...

Hello! I will be applying to Duke this fall for RD, and I have no idea if I should apply with just my SAT, or apply with my ACT as well. Here are my scores:

SAT Superscore: R(710) M(740) W(780) E(11) ----> (2230)

ACT: E(33) M(35) R(33) S(29) W(10) ----> C(33)

Although both composites translate to about the same score, I'm worried about the science on the ACT, since I would be applying as an Earth and Ocean Sciences Major in Trinity. I don't want them to think I'm that bad at science or anything!

Let me know what you think I should do! Thanks for the help!

I’d send both. That shows you are a consistently a good test taker. I wouldn’t worry about a slightly low ACT science score - this shouldn’t overly concern adcoms if your science grades in your courses are solid. In addition, Duke supposedly simply looks only at your best scores when evaluating your application, so they’ll pick the one that they see as better based on their metrics. It’s really hard to tell what would be seen more favorably in their eyes. They assign you a “test score” mark on a 1-5 scale. Duke also supposedly weighs math and verbal more heavily than writing (they essentially view writing as another SATII). Since your writing is the best score, your M+V of 1450 is arguably worse than a 33 ACT. Did you also take SATIIs? If those are good (700+), I’d send them too. The more data that reinforces the fact that you’re a good student, the better.

I agree with Bluedog. Good call on the writing score inflating your SAT…plus your ACT Math is pretty great.
SATIIs are always a good idea. Prep with the books however, don’t show up cold to take those little tests.
The rest of your application will matter a lot. Your test scores are pretty much the norm at Duke. Best of luck…and spread the love to more schools with less dicey admission percentages. good job!

Thanks for all the info. I have three SAT IIs as of now. US(790) Physics(750) and Math I(710). I’m considering taking the Math II this October, but I haven’t fully decided yet. I feel like it would be more worth while to work on my Apps with the little free time I have!
