To those of you who chance....

What exactly is your basis for these things? Do you just arbitrarily convey judgement or do you actually research? Have any of you ever actually told people that certain schools were reaches just to defer them from applying? or told people that they were matches when you truly thought they were in over their heads? Just curious because so many people take chances seriously and actually base their decisions heavily on them.

What research? There is no definitive for college admissions. After seeing about a million chances threads, you start to get a good idea of what stands out (amc, rsi) and what doesn't (nhs, who's who) and can make a valued judgement.

How are you so sure of this, do you follow up on these people's lives. I'd say your wrong. My guess is most people who make chances threads on here are committed to applying to their schools no matter what reponses they get from the chances.

What exactly is your aim here?

There's no aim. It's called curiosity because I notice a lot of the time people speak so definitively about chances and just as how they say people can lie about their stats, anyone can write any crap on a chance. I'm not exactly advocating that chances are stupid or whatever, but I just think that in the process of asking, people forget that they are just being chanced by others their own age.

- ye you seemed to have misinterpreted there. I mean what was the basis of the reply....was there anything semi solid backing it up....

CyberWrongPie answered your questions very well IMHO. Chances threads are not nearly definitive and the people posting them are fully aware of that. If anything, chances threads only really help the severely underqualified, by deflating potentially inflated expectations. The same cannot be said for the average and highly qualified applicants to top schools. There is simply no way to predict the decisions for those applicants. For instance, I posted several threads myself and must have had nearly 50+ people tell me I have a great shot at getting in at UPenn ED. As flattering as such comments are, I am still not fully confident in my chances of admission. It is merely reassuring to know that I shouldn't expect a flat-out rejection. The rest is in the hands of the admissions committee.

Ye that's basically the same for me. I tried to chance on here a couple of times but people here don't really know or acknowledge external exams so they don't have much to go on, which is what made me wonder about how people here go about doing their chances. Anyways, that curiosity bug has sufficiently been killed so best of luck with UPenn!

When I post in chance threads, I ignore everything but Class rank, GPA and SAT/ACT then I guess based on how hard the schools are to get into. URM/legacy and in state or not may factor in, depending on how easy it is to find that in the post.

I think it is a lot of

"in at all maybe not at x school but can you chance me as well -link-"

i did it when i first started lol

haha ye i figured a lot of that went around and yet, no matter what, I can't help but ask for chances lol.
