D wrote what I think is a lovely piece about an activity that she does with her dad and has done for years. I will leave it at that since it's hers and I haven't asked to share. It is something that is a club thing at target LACs but she hasn't written it in the vein of "I will do this at college x." It was a reflection on having gotten away from a core activity in the business of school and other ECs and rediscovering it and bonding time. I thought it was well written and moving.

Q: is this an OK thing to do, or should this essay be about an EC on her formal activity list? I have heard it both ways. Some advisors say, "tell us something new about yourself," and some advise to stick to things that demonstrate leadership, etc. To me, many of the EC list items are fairly self-explanatory or can be covered in the 2 line box - but I"m not an expert.
