I noticed from photos that today at Church they are wearing their neckties (I know there is another name for it?) and their hats! I think that was something they earned.? Cant wait for my phone call! I know you all are waiting patiently by the phone!

Neckerchief.

What does the neckerchief signify?

It is a more formal plebe uniform. In the schedule, the plebes rate knowing how to wear that uniform today. They will wear it to church and other more formal training evolutions from now on.

Where did you see these Photos. I did not see a category on Thornton's for Church service.

Dropshots.. i think todays pics are posted under USNA2010. ,I have seriously given up on Thornton's for getting decent photos :)

Solid white T's underneath Blouse today. And they got new Black shoes!

If the system's working like it did for my son's class, they're 'earning' bits of the unform. We noticed it most during over the progression of the plebe parades, shoes, covers, belts etc

White Works "A" (Alpha) - White works blouse/trousers over crewneck t-shirt with neckerchief, black socks, black leather shoes, and white combination cover

White Works "C" (Charlie) - White works blouse/trousers over crewneck t-shirt with black socks, black leather shoes, and blue rim dixie cover

White Works "E" (Echo) - White works blouse/trousers over USNA blue rim t-shirt and shorts with regulation white shoes

White Works "F" (Foxtrot) - White works blouse/trousers over crewneck t-shirt, black socks and black leather shoes

The uniform that the plebes wore today is White Works "A" (Alpha)
I have no reason why Bravo or Delta is not used!

I don't think these uniforms are earned! It is just a progression through plebe summer. What I mean is that these uniforms were set for changeover on this day...it wasn't like...wow the plebes are doing so well, lets let them wear alpha.

No, not earned them by merit, but by time...going from I-Day to PPW and into the Ac Year. Getting away from getting everything all at once

Yes...the next "major" think to be earned will be Summer Whites!

I think you're right!

and dare I say the first time they get to wear them "out" is at the Orioles game.... :o

(oh, I'm going to hate myself in the morning! :o )

What does the neckerchief signify?

The only significance that comes to mind is a story I heard YEARS ago that gave the reason for its color as being a perpetual statement of mourning for John Paul Jones.

I have no earthly idea if that is even remotely true. I'm going to search around and see if I find anything official.

For the record, rolling and knotting that thing correctly is a serious PITA.

the whole JPJ thing sounds nice, but considering John Paul Jones died in France, forgotten by his countrymen until TR needed a naval hero a hundred years later; a perpetual state of mourning for a man who's death was scarcely noticed by a US Navy that didn't yet exist seems rather doubtful. (sorry to ruin the myth... fruits of a history degree at the Academy I guess)
