Today Show/Princeton Review: UVa = #1 Best Value (again)

Congrats UVa! Here's the video from today's Today Show segment about the best public and private school values.

TODAY Show -- Best Value Colleges

Can’t say that I am surprised. I feel lucky that I am instate :)

Same here. :D

I’m glad I’m in-state as well. Hopefully I get into UVa to feel even more lucky! :D

Yes we Virginians are very, very fortunate to have schools like UVA, W&M, VT and JMU (all of which were on the top 50 list btw) in our backyards. Hopefully the state legislators will see this review, realize what a tremendous asset these schools of higher education are for our state, and fund them adequately (are you listening Gov. McDonnell?)

Cheers for UVA and the rest for continuing to give the leaders of tomorrow a chance for a great education at a price they (and their parents) can reasonably afford!

As much as I agree with KandKsmom, we’re only cheering UVA on this forum because it was named number one on the list. Let’s not deviate attention from that.

^ sorry wahoomb, not my intention at all  …just “showing a little love” for all these Virginia schools. UVA is a rightful #1 and is a school that we Virginians (and alums) are very proud of. Congrats again to your school.

We are thrilled to see UVa getting the recognition it deserves here. As Virginia residents we have access to a first class university that is still affordable.

The ‘sticker price’ tells only part of the story here. UVa has need blind admissions, is committed to meeting 100% of demonstrate need, and has Access UVa. This makes the University more affordable for non Virginians as well.

I have a UVa hopeful this year and generally stay in the background here. However as a native Virginian I’m really proud that UVa has managed to do this despite lack of support from the state.

Wah-hoo-wah!!!

I’m not even instate and I’m thrilled about the price. UVA is a top notch university for a reasonable (compared to other privates) cost. I’m actually suprised a state funded and run school could become so prestigious. I look at my state schools and ask myself what happened.

UVA’s #1 on the Princeton Review calculation, but isn’t it great that another Virginia school, William and Mary, is ranked #7 nationally?

Good options for VA students…bigger vs. smaller school, big time sports at UVA and more of a major research University, better faculty-student ratio at W&M…really depends on what a student is looking for.

My wife went to UVA undergrad and grad, and my daughter is heading to W&M in September. So we’re taken full advantage of these 2 great schools.

VA Tech and JMU are both also in PR’s top 50. Again, great options for VA students.

I think the faculty at each of these fine institutions are equally of a high caliber and students that attend either W&M or UVA are very fortunate. Also, UVa has many courses that have great student to faculty ratio’s.

^^ No doubt on both counts – I’m just saying that overall W&M has a better faculty-student ratio…

According to US News and World Report, for:

William and Mary it’s 12:1…see [William and Mary | College of William and Mary | Best College | US News](http://colleges.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/best-colleges/william-and-mary-3705)

UVA is 16:1…see [UVA | University of Virginia | Best College | US News](http://colleges.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/best-colleges/uva-6968)

Of course I’m not saying either school is “better” than the other…UVA has assets that W&M does not, as I pointed out. It depends upon what you are looking for as a student, and it’s great we have such high quality options in Virginia, including JMU and Virginia Tech and others.

I never had a TA at UVA and I even had class with two other students. I also went to W&M my freshman year and I remember being taught by lecturers and having a TA. Both are fine schools and in both you can find small and large classes, it just depends on what classes you take. The faculty-student ratio is an insignificant statistic because it doesn’t take into account anything else but just numbers.

Well said, Wahoomb.

The reason why UVa is ranked #1 is because of a combination of great academics and great financial aid. UVa is one of the few public schools in the nation that meets 100% of need. It would be awesome if the other Virginia public schools could do so as well. Here’s the list of colleges that meet 100% of need.
