So, we've seen colleges' website stated, minimum TOEFL 233, or 250 or equivalent PBT and iBT scores, but is there a distinction? or just a pass or fail thing.
What i mean is, is getting a 300 in CBT to be consider a better mastery of english? or as long as you get 250 and above, irrespective you are 255 or 277 or 299, you are deem as passing the cut off points for that particular college??
So if what my sources of facts are right, a SAT 2100 student with TOEFL 277 will be equal to another SAT 2100 student with TOEFL 290/300??

If everything else is equal, the student with the higher TOEFL scores would be a little bit better off. But in general the TOEFL is only a minor component of an application and mostly viewed on a pass-fail basis. And there are enough students being admitted to schools for which they do not even meet the official TOEFL score requirement.

I disagree.....TOEFL is irrelevant.... most college don't require you to take it if you get 600+ in SAT verbal.
If a college requires you to take it, they just want to make sure u clear the cut off... its no basis for judgement

yeah b@r!um and badman are quiet right, it's essentially a pass or fail thing. Many schools accept TOEFL in lieu of SAT 1, in that case TOEFL scores would matter.

Can't remember exactly, but there was one college which doesn't require the TOEFL if the SAT is simply available in your country (Think maybe Williams? not sure)

However, what i saw in some websites is that internationals' SAT score will be judged differently if english is not native language, but with the criteria you have a toefl score of 250 and above, so i suppose afterall, an international student will always be better off with a >250 toefl score with a good SAT. Agree??

I never said the the TOEFL score is important.
What I did say was IF EVERYTHING ELSE is EQUAL, than the applicant with the higher TOEFL score would probably have a slight advantage (which was what the original question was referring to). But show me two applicants who are really totally equal in all aspects but their TOEFL scores (grades, ECs, personality, heritage...).

Well, you're all right lol. Im applying to around 12 schools, and I had the same question so I called each school and asked them. (Cause i was sick when i took it although I did get around a 270-280 I could have gotten a 300) Anyway, all of them said if your over the requirement its fine except Upenn which directly stated the the higher you get the better chance you have of getting in, and I think Amherst said the same thing aswell not sure though. Anyway, I'm not gonna take it again just for Upenn, so the majority of colleges just want you to be over the requirement. Plus, if your SAT I reading is really low and your Toefl is really high it wouldnt make much of a diffrence The toefl only proves you can speak minimum english. I got a 6/6 on the toefl essay and I think a 10/12. So Toefl in my opinion isnt really important.
Ok, Ive just said a lot of crap so ignore most of it lol.
