TOEFL Required?

I'm a permanent resident of the U.S. and I speak English perfectly fine, but some colleges I'm applying to require the TOEFL if the student's native language is not English. English is technically not my native language, but I go to a school where classes are taught in English and I have decent SAT scores. Do I have to take the TOEFL because to me it seems like a total waste of time and money.

bump :-h

TOEFL is required if the primary language of instruction in your HS isn’t English. You’re fine.

@T26E4 However, on the CMU website, the TOEFL is required and they don’t mention anything about exemptions for any non-native English speakers.

In your situation, it would defy logic. Call them Monday and confirm – especially since I’m sure you’ll be sending them your super high GPA from your English language, American high school.

Most schools will be willing to waive the TOEFL for you. Some, like Bucknell and Bates, have hoops that internationals have to go through, but even they will consider your application without your TOEFL scores. What kind of schools are you looking into?

Note that, however, some schools base their decision to waive your TOEFL score on the basis of your SAT CR score. At Grinnell, a 600 would suffice. At Columbia/Cornell, however, you would need 650/670-ish.

Yes- I will call the 2 colleges that require the TOEFL and ask for a waiver. I’ll argue my SAT and AP scores. :D

I’ve called and emailed those b***. They are probably the only school that doesn’t give s about SAT/ACT score or language of instruction. Let me know if they changed the story for you though!

Ugh CMU won’t budge. What an annoying college. I might get my parents to yell at them today.

Different schools have different policy. Some schools would waive the TOEFL requirement if graduated from a HS in the US. Some require 2-4 years in HS for that. Others may waive it with certain section score in SAT/ACT.

@billcsho I called them and they wouldn’t accept anything but the TOEFL. I might just need to speak to them in person one day.
