I have tons of questions regarding Stony Brook; I like to be educated before making a choice.

How is the journalism program at Stony Brook? I know Stony is not known for its journalism program, which makes me worried. I have other schools that are more known for a journalism/English major path, but I am not as interested as I am in Stony Brook.

How is the dining? I have heard some negative and positive things about it.

What are the best places to dorm?

Is it really that empty during the weekends?

How are the athletic facilities? What if I wanted to play some basketball? Would it be easy to find a pick-up game?

I’m going to skip the journalism question as I am not familiar with the program.

How is the dining? I have heard some negative and positive things about it.

Dining at SBU is much like other campuses and operates on a la carte system. In addition to the normal cafeteria offerings, there are also chains such as Wendy’s and California Pizza Kitchen on campus. It’s a lot better now than when I was a freshman at Stony Brook.

Prices are a bit steep; however, it’s to be expected in the NY metropolitan area.

What are the best places to dorm?

You are assigned to a quad based upon your undergraduate college (NOT academic college). Personally, I prefer suite-style, so I stuck between Roth my first two years, Tabler my third year and West my fourth year. Roth was the most convenient in terms of proximity to the academic mall but I enjoyed the atmosphere of Tabler the most.

Is it really that empty during the weekends?

Although many individuals go home or travel elsewhere over the weekend, there is a substantial (thousands) residential crowd left. I never had an issue with “nothing to do” on weekends.

**How are the athletic facilities? What if I wanted to play some basketball? Would it be easy to find a pick-up game? **

Easy to find pick-up games. Each residential quad has its own fitness center and the main University fitness center is located in the Student Activities Center. They’re building a new campus recreation building which is sure to be outstanding when completed.
