are 680, 570, 590 too low for an asian female?

hm…sorry to tell you… but I think they are. plus… youre asian (ORM)

I agree, the caveat could be that if you just moved to the states in the last few yrs and english is a second language.

I have a very good friend’s son there. He went to an exp private school, scored 2200 on SAT, had all AP’s with a 3.7 uw, legacy from both parents, tons of ECs (crew, Boys League, model UN position) and was wait listed. He eventually got in and is there now, but that is the caliber you are going up against.

Remember Columbia has an acceptance rate of less than 9% for the class of 12. They accepted @1600 kids out of almost 20K applicants. Their rate is lower than Harvard, Brown, UPEnn

these are subject scores, not the real sats. assume the real sats are 2100+. would that make a difference?

The avg SAT is closer to over 2200. The only way for the 2100 is if you have an amazing resume…again look at my friends son, he had an amazing resume and was waitlisted. You need to give more info for people to give a real feel of chances. Plus, subject scores are typically what you would get in the SAT… in this scenario you are expecting to go up 70 pts in ea area.

Most of my SAT I’s and II’s are mid-high 600’s :(…and im doing RD…this really makes me sad if that’s the case bullet :/…

According to them 75% has 2220 and a 33. Avg it out and you are looking at 750+ on ea section.

Again they only accept less than 10%, Upenn and Duke accept more according to USNWR

They are considered among the most selective.

Sorry about the news, but none of this means you won’t get in. I am not on the board, and you should hope that you do, but be realistic at the same time. Alot has to do with your major, and that is why some kids go how did they get in? My scores and ECS are better Majors, ECs, life experience, legacies all add into the equation. You will never ever have a chance if you don’t try!

From the Columbia website:

"Admitted Student Statistics [for Class of 2012]:

Of schools that provided us with a class rank, approximately 93% of accepted students were in the top 10% of their graduating class; 98% were in the top 20% of their class.

The middle 50% of admitted students scored between a 1400 and a 1540 on the Math and Critical Reading sections of the SAT.

The middle 50% of admitted students scored between a 2090 and a 2300 on the Math, Critical Reading and Writing sections of the SAT.

The middle 50% of admitted students scored between a 31 and a 35 on the ACT."

all this is nonsense, even with an 1850 you have a shot I know a kid enrolled in seas with less than a 2000, a urm this year got into seas with an 1800 something, I have a friend in CC with an 1860. If you aren’t doing well, like top 10%, in school or you don’t have something absolutely extra ordinary about you, then you really stand no shot.

you absolutely need to retake all of your SAT IIs, especially the ones you got < 600 on and get >= 700, otherwise i’d have to agree with confidentialcoll

yeah I got a 1970 on my SAT and got in. What helped though is that I got a 33 on my ACT I believe.

redo those SAT’s.

Quote:
Top 10% of high school class: 94%

SAT score (25/75 percentile): 1980-2220

ACT score (25/75 percentile): 28-33
“According to them 75% has 2220 and a 33. Avg it out and you are looking at 750+ on ea section.”

Umm, didn’t those stats mean that about 1/4 of them have SATs over 2220 and not that 75 of the Columbia population scored a 2220 or above?

The combination of high SATs and the low subject tests will point to either a low energy level or poor preparation. Either interpretation can be fatal to your application.

mardad, so your saying since my sat scores are 2300. But my subject tests are, 670, 710, and 650. Its bad? What if someone had an off day and their is no time to re - take?

jcancollegebound, your point is correct but your statistics are wrong/outdated. Last year, 25% had an SAT of 2300 or higher, or an ACT of 35 or 36. 75% had an SAT of 2090 or higher, or an ACT of 31 or higher.

you mean 75% 2300 and 25% 2090?
kinda confusing :s

25% scored 2300 or higher; 75% (including the 25% just mentioned) scored 2090 or higher.

Oh, well I hadn’t checked the stats, I was just pointing out the flawed view.

“mardad, so your saying since my sat scores are 2300. But my subject tests are, 670, 710, and 650. Its bad? What if someone had an off day and their is no time to re - take?”

it may not send your application to the shredder, but do you seriously think that with 20,000 applicants and an 8% acceptance rate the Columbia admissions committee has the luxury of granting you wiggle space for ‘off days’? Sorry :(

I guess it would depend on the rest of your app, and what the subject tests are
