I know this may not be the right forum, but any of you have any experience with your children to answer these questions? I found the Parents Forum to be the most active out of most.

So this is what my schedule looks like for now for two years:
I at LEAST need a B in Spanish. I am taking the Spanish SL test, but the class is an AP/HL class because a separate class is not offered so both years are equivalent to the (AP Spanish Language and AP Spanish Lit) courses at my school.

Junior year:
English HL
Physics HL
Math HL
Spanish SL in HL class (AP Spanish Lang)
Art SL
HOA HL
TOK
Soccer

Senior Year:
English HL
Physics HL
Math HL
Spanish SL in HL Class (AP Spanish Lit)
AP Chem
HOA HL
TOK
Soccer

Is this course load too much? Or is it manageable if I only need a B in Spanish. The thing that scares me is that senior year I am going to have AP Chem (which is the hardest at my school) and AP Physics (also one of the hardest at my school) and AP Spanish (I'm a non native and it's literature but the natives say it's super easy). Plus college apps! My only other option is to take German Ab Initio instead which all my counselors are saying will hurt my look in college admissions since I did not take the most rigorous language course when I had the opportunity. However, since I am going to major in Biology, I cannot have my science grades suffer for my language grades. But I just need a B in Spanish because it is equivalent to an A in German. What do you think and what would you do if you were in my shoes?

i would make sure i kept up in class and asked for help early. sounds like spanish is making you nervous - not sure where you are looking for college but it would be great if you could study ahead and ask for help early and get the grade.
if you don’t feel good about it though, german makes sense
also i can’t stress enough the importance of starting college apps over the summer. how great you will feel when you can complete your essays before senior year and be able to concentrate on school! also be sure to ask for letters of rec early

Do you really have to take a language senior year after taking AP Spanish as a junior? My kid stopped after AP French in her junior year and things worked out well for her. I’m aware the competitive schools say 4 years of language, but D’s college counselor said that going thru AP was sufficient and like you she could have taken a language lit class senior year or started a new language. She chose honors EC and poli sci classes instead. You have a pretty full and challenging schedule without language senior year. Good luck.

My daughter also stopped language after completing AP as a junior. I don’t see how anyone could say you didn’t have enough years if you’ve completed an AP class. In her case there actually was no other class to take, but even if there had been, I don’t think it would have hurt her.

College Foreign Language requirement will depend on your Foreign language placement test, which is required (maybe at some places, maybe at all UG?) before you register for first semester of freshman year. I do not know how it works when the major rquires such a class. D. placed into 3rd year of college Spanish, I do not remember if she had AP or not, it was irrelevant. This class was one of her best UG classes and she was able to speak after it, which made whole ton of difference later in Med. School.
I strongly advise no matter what is your major, do not skip college Foregn language, very handy, opens lots of opportunities.

My D took 11 AP classes, 1 PreAP (3rd year Spanish) and 2 soccer classes in her last 2 years of HS. Several of her friends did about the same and they got all As.

I think it was probably not necessary for my D, I don’t think she’d have missed out on any scholarships or college acceptances she did get if she’d taken a little lighter load. It also was not good enough for acceptance at Stanford and UNC for her.

Having said that , no one can tell you if you can or cannot do something, we also do not know what results you will get from various colleges.

Does the physics class combine IB and AP students? If they’re taught separately, I’d recommend taking the Physics SL exam this year and taking AP Physics C next year. IB Physics isn’t taught with calculus and is arguably the only IB HL class that doesn’t exceed its AP counterpart.

It’s somewhat odd that ToK takes two years at your school (usually it’s either senior year or junior spring & senior fall), but every school teaches it a bit differently. If you haven’t taken AP or IB Biology, you should consider doing so. Introductory biology courses can be brutal, especially at a college with lots of pre-meds.

@warblersrule Yes, in my school IB and AP are combines for Physics. And I took AP Bio sophomore year. Do you think Physics HL, AP Chem, and AP Spanish Lit would be too hard or it is possible?
