I'll be a sophomore next semester at the University of Florida. I took 1.5 years off college after my grandparents became sick and to start a small business (that didn't really take off till recently). What my chances for transfer into Penn CAS, Economics?

My Stats:
- UF Scholarship (Came for this...I did get into Cornell back in HS though)
- First Sem GPA: 3.8 (Presidential Honor Roll)
- Second Sem GPA: 3.4
- Cumulative: 3.6
- Microeconomics (A+)
- Did NOT take Calculus (but I got A- in Computer Programming...will that help?)

SATs: 700V, 750M, 720W

SAT Math Level I: 760

VERY NICE HS and College professor recs

Is it even worth applying? They will definitely ask why the heck I took 1.5 years off college. To be honest my family was in a bad time but there really isn't much I can talk about.

Why would you think that taking a year off would hurt you?

Especially if you discuss how you used that time for your business, how your business is doing now, and why you are choosing to come back to school now.

minkus, thanks for the reply. It’s because I don’t have anything significant to talk about. I basically studied books on my own and looked after my grandma everything. It’s not like I joined the Army and came back from Iraq or something. As for my business - it’s an online startup that isn’t even finished yet and obviously no revenue whatsoever. It’s just I haven’t much to talk about other than: 1. Wake up. 2. Study. 3. Look after grandpa. 4. Work on business that hasn’t gone anywhere yet.

Idk about transfer stuff but couldn’t that be a really good essay? Taking care of your grandpa is so sweet and shows how caring and compassionate you are

If anything it will make you a unique applicant. I have a friend down the hall that transferred in at 22 after having done something similar - no worries!
