tenis, sure no problemā€¦

why donā€™t you do the research and come up with where Michigan is ranked in the top ten in these areas

ā€œrjk, so let me get this straight againā€¦Michigan is ranked higher in 5 departmernts, 4 of which UC Berkeley doesnā€™t haveā€¦and UC Berkeley is ranked higher in 90 departments, yet you DARE state that Michigan is the best well rounded university?ā€

JohnAdams, I am not sure what 90 departments you are referring to. Maybe you are including sub departments, such as Cellular Biology and Macroeconomic Theory.

At any rate, Cal is truly better than Michigan in onlya handful of disciplines and programs, mostly in the Sciences. In most other disciplines and programs, whether Cal is ranked higher than Michigan or not, Cal is not better than Michigan. That includes traditional disciplines such as Anthropology, the Classics, Education, Foreign Languages, History, International Studies, Music, Philosophy, Political Science, Psychology and Sociology as well as professional programs such as Business, Law and Public Policy/Affairs.

In many other disciplines and programs, such as Mathematics and Engineering, the difference in quality is negligible. Yes, Cal is generally ranked among the top 5 in such subjects, but Michigan is usually ranked 4 or 5 spots lower.

The only departments where Cal is truly stronger than Michigan are Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science and Physics.

I would never argue that Michigan is exactly equal to Cal in pure academic terms. I always admit that where academics are concerned, Cal is indeed stronger than Michigan, albeit slightly.

However, I will agree with rjk when he says that Michigan is more well rounded. It isnā€™t just its top rated Medical and Health science programs or Schoool of Architecture mind you. I think that Michiganā€™s campus is more pleasant than Calā€™s, that Ann Arbor is a more complete college town than Berkeley, that Michiganā€™s endowment is significantly larger than Calā€™s etcā€¦

For the 10th time, at least, Michigan OFFERS MORE high quality programs across more academic disciplines than Berkeley. BERKELEY IS THE BETTER SCHOOL! MICHIGAN IS MORE WELL ROUNDED! MICHIGAN IS AS WELL ROUNDED AS RUTGERS, BUT IT IS A BETTER SCHOOL OVERALL! THEREFORE IMHO MICHIGAN IS THE BEST WELL ROUNDED SCHOOL IN THE COUNTRY THAT IS A PUBLIC! Thatā€™s it. I am though.

rjk, again prove to us that Michigan blows UC Berkeley away in the area of Music, particularly in the area that counts for ā€œprestigeā€, because, after all that is the topic of this thread, is it not?

See post #312. There is no argument left, really.
Post #321 includes stuff Adams left out (deliberately).

rjk, but I have just proven you wrong on thisā€¦

even faced with the facts you continue to make the false statements on this

Also add Education rankingsā€¦

Michigan: higher education administration (#1), educational psychology (#2)
Berkeley: educational policy (#7)

Michigan is simply more well rounded. This isnā€™t debatable.

But still, the argument ended. Post #312.

add the following rankings for UC Berkeley:

Comparative Literature 10th
French 7th
German 1st
Philosophy 4th
Spanish & Portuguese 9th
Astrophysics & Astronomy 3rd
Anthropology 3rd
Geography 6th, tie
Linguistics 6th, tie

Still no medical school, no dental school, no nursing school, no health professions.

Both schools have Liberal Arts, Engineering, etc. etcā€¦but Berkeley is lacking in one MAJOR area. Thatā€™s all Iā€™m saying. Berkeley is the better school, but Michigan is more well rounded. Canā€™t you just at least admit that JohnAdams12?

And what is your source for the other rankings???

rjk, but that is not what you said was it?

you have already been caught with several false statements

what you said was that Michigan had the best well rounded school, which is a false statement

you also said that Michigan had more quality departments than any other school, and this is a false statement as shown below

^^^^Ridiculous! This doesnā€™t prove that Cal is more well rounded, it just proves it has more higher ranked departments. You have to try to combine both. You obviously cannot. Michigan doesnā€™t teach geography, but does teach all the other disciplines mentioned. Still Berkeley doesnā€™t teach medicine, dentistry, nursing, pharmacy, etcā€¦

Michigan is #9 for Dentistry based on 2009 rankings.

[Dentalschoolsā€™s Blog](<a href=ā€œhttp://dentalschools.ā– ā– ā– ā– ā– ā– ā– ā– ā– ā– ā– ā– ā– /]Dentalschoolsā€™sā€>http://dentalschools.ā– ā– ā– ā– ā– ā– ā– ā– ā– ā– ā– ā– ā– /)

Michigan has more quality programs ACROSS DISCIPLINES than Berkeley. Berkeley offers a few areas where Michigan does not a program, but Michigan offer many more simply because it HAS MORE SCHOOLS AND AND HAS A GREATER ACADEMIC BREADTH. I agree that on average Berkeleyā€™s progams are stronger than Michiganā€™s, but not enough so to make up for academic areas where Berkeley has no showing at all! Those programs that Michigan has that Berkeley does not, are all stellar for the most part. That is why Isay Michigan is the best most rounded public school in the country. Berkeley, for the last time, is THE BEST PUBLIC SCHOOL IN THE COUNTRY. We will just continue to disagree on this.
