ārjk, so let me get this straight againā¦Michigan is ranked higher in 5 departmernts, 4 of which UC Berkeley doesnāt haveā¦and UC Berkeley is ranked higher in 90 departments, yet you DARE state that Michigan is the best well rounded university?ā

JohnAdams, I am not sure what 90 departments you are referring to. Maybe you are including sub departments, such as Cellular Biology and Macroeconomic Theory.

At any rate, Cal is truly better than Michigan in onlya handful of disciplines and programs, mostly in the Sciences. In most other disciplines and programs, whether Cal is ranked higher than Michigan or not, Cal is not better than Michigan. That includes traditional disciplines such as Anthropology, the Classics, Education, Foreign Languages, History, International Studies, Music, Philosophy, Political Science, Psychology and Sociology as well as professional programs such as Business, Law and Public Policy/Affairs.

In many other disciplines and programs, such as Mathematics and Engineering, the difference in quality is negligible. Yes, Cal is generally ranked among the top 5 in such subjects, but Michigan is usually ranked 4 or 5 spots lower.

The only departments where Cal is truly stronger than Michigan are Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science and Physics.

I would never argue that Michigan is exactly equal to Cal in pure academic terms. I always admit that where academics are concerned, Cal is indeed stronger than Michigan, albeit slightly.

However, I will agree with rjk when he says that Michigan is more well rounded. It isnāt just its top rated Medical and Health science programs or Schoool of Architecture mind you. I think that Michiganās campus is more pleasant than Calās, that Ann Arbor is a more complete college town than Berkeley, that Michiganās endowment is significantly larger than Calās etcā¦
