Tough Decision - Please Help Me Decide.

OK, so i have the opportunity to take an AP level Art History class that i am VERY interested in. I talked to the teacher and she told me i COULD take the class, but it would not count as AP credit and wouldn't show up as "AP" on my transcript. Do you think it's worth the effort to take the class, and the AP exam, and not even receive high school credit for the class? Or, if i were to take the class, could i explain this to the college(s) I'm applying to, and they would understand? The only reason i want to take the class is because I'm interested in Art History and would like to study it in a school environment as opposed to just studying it all on my own, as i would do in a self-study.

P.S. If i were to take the class, and then take the AP exam and receive a 4 or 5, would that look BETTER to colleges because i did the exam without an AP titled course that my school doesn't offer?

i’m confused. this is an “ap level” class, but not an actual ap class?

Well the teacher is making the class only for me, because i want to study art history. She told me she has to make a syllabus and everything to make it an “AP class” with the title of “AP Art History.” So, she told me that if i wanted to i could still take the class but it will not have the AP title with it, it will just be a class where I’m by myself, studying independently with the teachers help whenever i need her.

To answer your question: it is not an actual AP class.

I guess that would technically be self studying, which looks pretty good I would think. Honestly, if you like Art History, take the class. You should have fun in high school and take classes you’ll enjoy. People are too stressed about having 7 ap tests and all AP classes and no regular classes to have fun. I know some friends whom refuse to join orchestra now because the A (which counts as a 4) will lower their GPA since they have A’s in AP classes (which counts at a 5). It’s ridiculous. Take the course and go have fun.

i graduated from college back in the stone age, and i still take art history classes at our local university (just for the fun of it, i’m not working on a degree).

personally, i like to hear other people’s opinions and questions regarding works of art, so I would not like an independent study of art history. but it you think you would like this arrangement, by all means go for it.

Yea i suppose you’re right. I honestly am one of those kids who wants the AP class for the weighted grade. But, art history is something i think I’m genuinely interested in and would like to explore the subject in greater depth. Thanks for your insight.
@wolfpackmom, how interesting is art history in your opinion? To me, discovering different pieces of art and being able to relate/know exactly what the painter/drawer’s intention was is amazing.

Anyone else want to contribute?

Why wouldn’t your school count this course as an elective. You could make this after school, so you don’t waste credits.

I’ve heard Art History is one of the most boring classes to self study. It’s much more interesting to actually have a teacher show slides and give commentary then to just study pictures.

That being said, if you truly like Art History, then that sounds like a great idea. Having a regular course designation might even help you, since you can say you went ahead and beyond and learned by yourself to take the ap exam.
