Tough? Easy?

For now I'm planning on doing business and use econ as my backup. I'm a FPF student so if anyone can tell me how these classes are, that'll be great. Thanks:

Math 1A (AP Calc AB -5, is this class too easy or is it okay since I've been told Haas does not care which math course you take.. and whats the difference between 1A and 1B?)

Anthro 1 (Opinions?)

Is English 1A offered in FPF? I have yet to pass with any of the pre-requisites and I will be taking AP Lit in May + the AWPE in May too.

I'm not exactly sure how to structure my class selection, any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Math 1A being too easy would be the least of your concerns if you’re pre-Haas. If you are only interested in taking a math class to fulfill the preHaas requirement, then I’d suggest that you go with the 16 series.

Math 1A is the equivalent of Calc AB to a certain degree except (with my professor at least) it was all about the theory behind calculus. I got a 5 on the AP Calc AB exam too, but I spent quite a bit of time at first in Math 1A learning how to write proofs, some basic math logic, and figuring out what exactly happens when I take limits (The central theme of the class). I don’t regret it, but all I’m saying is if you’re pre-Haas this class might not be right for you. Math 1B is the quivalent of AP Calc BC.

What is Math 16A exactly?

Also, does anyone know if there’s a way to know which teacher might be teaching a specific class to begin with? Thanks.

schedule.berkeley.edu. Search Fall 09 classes.

16A is generally filled with premeds (translation: hypercompetitive). Math 1A wasn’t bad at all; I did fine (took BC my junior year; promptly forgot it all senior year)

Math 16A from everyone I’ve talked to is one of the easiest class they’ve ever taken. Most people apparently don’t even go to lecture and still get A in the class. Even if it is filled with premeds, it doesn’t appear to be all that competitive.

Math 1A wasn’t bad at all and I’m really glad I took it, but my point is that it isn’t necessarily easy and you might not necessarily get an A very easily depending on your professor. My professor for Math 1A last semester gave out more Cs than As. Though I’ve got to say that it was by far my favorite class last semester because I really enjoyed learning the theory behind calculus. If that’s your deal, then by all means go for it but don’t expect it to be like AP Calc.

^ who was your teach for 1a…i had olsson…grrr pretty much failed me. ****es me off

I had Olsson too actually. If you have a pickaprof account, you will find our grade distribution from last semester to be 22% As, 37% Bs, 29% Cs, 9% Ds, and 3% Fs, which doesn’t sound that bad. But if you compare our grade distribution with other Math 1A classes, you’ll find that the only teacher who had a lower grade distribution was Vojta with 21% As, 32% Bs, and 30% Cs.

Still though, I must say I really liked Olsson. He just wanted us to learn what the real definition of a limit was and to prove things all the time, which was difficult because I hadn’t seen a proof since 8th grade geometry nonetheless on the AP Calc test.

hated him. now i gotta retake 1a to bump up the grade. there’s a fine line between wanting us to learn something and (for me at least) never teaching it well enough, but instead repeated it so many times that it becomes convoluted in the end.

And to top it off, when one has a lady yell that he/she sucks at teaching in the middle of class, I’d think that says something. I mean it might have something to do with my GSI too, who just made us work out of the workbook w/o ever giving us answers and then giving us quizzes in which no partial credit is given whatsoever (out of 2 problems each worth 5 points).

/endrant.
haha. rawr.

Just curious, who was your GSI?

LOL

Math 1A was nothing compared to Math 1B.

Vojta definitely means business, yes. Olsson is a very nice guy in most courses, but he’s probably forced to have a certain curve for courses like 1A and 1B.

By the way, in case people didn’t know, Vojta is essentially a genius. Not only was he a top ranker (Putnam Fellow) as an undergrad, he is basically at the TOP of his field.

Oh just read that. Surprising that Olsson had even a comparatively low grade distribution. He’s a very friendly man, and I can’t see him failing people! But I guess he runs a course like 1A differently.

I think its the way Olsson curved the class or rather didn’t curve the class. He curved each test individually, but not the class as a whole and a lot of people who bombed one test completely can’t recover their grade if the entire class isn’t curved. Furthermore, he curved Midterm 2 a bit harshly (above the average) because he believed that if the student couldn’t even complete one question then they didn’t deserve to a passing grade. It’s totally reasonable, but since a good portion of the class didn’t meet his standarads the grades were kind of low.

^^ Interesting. I guess I think that seems a reasonable thing to do, though by the sounds of it, there may be more to the story, since some seem very unhappy about the class.

Well, for both out midterms, 3 out of 5 questions were proof based. They were also graded rather harshly if it wasn’t a rigorous enough proof (basically all or nothing) by the GSIs, but the problem was we didn’t know math logic so it was quite hard for us to come up with a proof in the first place. So we were sort of stuck in a negative loop. For the final the grading got better though, I got 5 points out of 8 on this delta-epsilon question for just writing the definition of the limit I was supposed to prove. But by then, the damage by the first two midterms had already been done.

How is Math 16A with Feldman? Apparently thats the professor this Fall in FPF classes.

omg. olsson was the worst. i got a C in his class. his midterm 2 was plain out ridiculous. i got a 5 on BC and took multivar in HS and could not for my life figure what to do to score above a B- and F respectively on his midterms…i guess i should just be happy i maust have done something right on the final to atleast have been able to pass the flippin class

Rateaprof has Feldman at 1.8 for easiness. Is it still wise to take 16A?

Hmm…Then you might want to look into your other options. Can you take Math 16A with Gu? Cause pickaprof shows that he has a fairly good grade distribution.
