Tough spot.

I'm in a tough spot. I currently attend a community college that I desperately want to leave. My journey has been a difficult one with many highs and lows (mostly lows). Anyhow, about three years ago I came to the conclusion that I needed to educate myself as a way out of the city I live in (Newark, N.J.) I basically taught myself all of the subjects I should have learned as child in school or at home- if my parents were educated themselves. I recently took the SAT and my hard worked paid off (I received the 2400 I worked my butt off for). I none the less feel depressed because I believe that my early community college record and high school record will keep me from going to a good school. Do you think any of the top admissions office will understand my situation and the lath of educating myself as an African American Male? The only other bright spot I have along with my SAT score that indicates my character is my work experience at a non-profit organization for mentally handicapped individuals.

Pleas I would like your feedback and all the advice I can get, thanks:-)

So you want to transfer to a 4 year right? I think you have a good sob story and no matter what people tell you, a sob story is considered when admitting. The 2400 SAT is very impressive, as is your hard work and dedication, though when transferring from a community college, high school records matter very little.

I think you should obtain 30-60 credits at your CC and try to maintain above a 3.0 gpa. When you can do that, apply to a 4 year, so either spring or fall session. You have good material for your essays and I’m sure you can get good rec letters if you need them.

You need to get yourself into the Transfer Counselor’s office at your CC. That person’s whole job is helping people transfer out.
