Hi, I am from Oklahoma. I am attending a community college right now in my first year of undergrad and I am extremely interested in transferring. I come from a very troubled family with a very troubling past and would greatly appreciate a college that is affordable through aid. I would also love to attend college somewhere along the northeast, but other than that I am extremely open minded would greatly appreciate the help.
My stats:
3.3 Highschool GPA
24 Act (currently enrolled to take again)
3.5 college gpa, 29 total credits for fall and spring
Work: I have worked a part time job through the last 3 years of my life, I currently took time off to study for the ACT as well as focus on transferring.
Extras: I have volunteered quite frequently, established 2 organisations at my highschool in which I am co-chairman of. I also played for my highschool football team which was nationally ranked.
I would appreciate all the help and advice from anyone and everyone! Also if anyone has any information regarding programs for troubled students, I would greatly appreciate the support!
Couple things - transfer students often get pretty poor aid. Some schools offer good merit scholarships to bring down costs. How much can your family pay per year?
Only my sister and I support our family with a combined income of less than 30k for a family of 6. So pretty much I can’t afford to pay out of pocket. I did read online about colleges like NYU and BC that offer a needs based financial aid, would you know anything about that?
NYU is notorious for providing very poor financial aid to transfer students, it’s discussed a lot on these forums. Can you go to an in-state school that is cheaper?
In Oklahoma, Universities are overly priced and provide extremely low amount of aid. So for me to attend OU for example, it would cost me somewhere in the neighborhood of 15-20k a year.
I’m not a financial aid expert, but with transfer students it can be hard to get aid.
- You can apply to schools like Suffolk & Hofstra & UW Bothell that guarantee merit aid, but they give different tiers based on your GPA.
- You can apply to transfer to a school that meets full need but a lot of the time they’re only full need/need blind for freshman admits.
If I were you, I’d maximize the amount of transferrable units you can get, so around 60 give or take, and then apply.
Thanks for the help, I’ll look into those schools.
