I currently attend a state school in Minnesota, this is my first semester (but I took 6 credits during the summer). At the end of this semester I will have between a 3.3 and 3.5 GPA with 20 credits completed.

I am applying to transfer to the University of Minnesota and UW Madison for the fall of 2014. My question is, how much do colleges look at College GPA vs. High School GPA and how valuable is a 3.3-3.5 GPA in college compared to a 3.3-3.5 in high school? I just want to know if I have a decent shot at either school.

The more credits you have completed, the less they will look at HS stats. The fact though that you are a freshman means your HS stats will weigh in your admission decision. If you were a sophomore it would be different. Also, I believe a 3.3-3.5 college GPA is pretty respectable, perhaps more so than if it were in HS, however obviously try to do better next semester. Do either UMTC or UW Madison require spring grades? If so that could help your case, assuming you do well.

Yeah, both require spring grades I believe. And my next semester I’m not taking math which I’m terrible at… So my GPA will be higher. What percentage of weight do they put on high school vs college? 25/75? 50/50? I’m taking rigorous classes and I’ve proven I can do well in these classes. Thanks!
