Transfer Applicant

I’m looking to transfer into Tufts for next Fall. I got rejected last year and I’m not too happy at my current institution and still think about Tufts as my dream school, so I’m not ready to give up. My application as a first year student seemed pretty good but I still did not get it, will a good GPA this semester for my college help me or more or less leave me in the same place? I’m definitely getting over a 3.5

Transferring in is hard because not that many people transfer out, so there are not many transfer slots open. It is very hard to predict your chances for success, but you need to be doing very well at your current institution AND be able to articulate a strong case for why your current school is not a good fit for you and why Tufts is a better fit.

There may also be some luck involved based on what your major happens to be…

I know of a student who was doing well at Georgetown and tried to transfer, but did not get in. She did get into a very selective LAC and I suspect that her reason for wanting to transfer resonated more at the LAC.

Good Luck!

You say that I need to explain why my current institution is not a good fit. However, I heard that I’m not really supposed to say anything bad about my current institution, but I can still avoid that and still clearly state my reason for transfer right? I am majoring in mechanical engineering by the way.

Yes.

Fit is more about your personality, your learning style and your educational goals.

It is about “matches” and “mismatches”, not “goodness” or “badness”. What is “good” for some may be “bad” for others.

If you start making value judgements about the school, you run the risk that others will use that to make value judgements about your personality.

I understand what you mean, I was only stating it like that because a “mismatch” is really close to “bad” because since its a mismatch, its bad for me. But I realize that its poor wording, using the word “bad”.

Thanks for your advice. Obviously this is my first time attempting a transfer and from what I’ve heard it is basically the same as applying to school as a freshman (especially since was applying as a first year college student last year), but there are those small differences such as stating that compelling reason that my current school is not a good fit.
