Wash U prides itself on being extremely flexible when it comes to transferring between schools. It is really as easy as signing a sheet of paper? i was just admitted to arts and sciences but might want to transfer to Olin if I go to Wash U.

Also, can anyone tell me about the health care management major in olin?

Yes, it really is that easy. ArtSci->Olin (and vice versa) is by far the easiest switch to make.

I don’t plan on doing healthcare management but I did some brief research for you. First you can pursue this whether you are an Olin or ArtSci student (same with any major on campus, except for Engineering if you are not an Engineer, I think). If you do remain an Olin student, you will need to complete all the foundational business courses in accounting, finance, some econ and stats, marketing etc. Afterwards, you take the required healthcare mgt courses:

Olin Grand Rounds: The Business and Practice of Medicine (B53 320) - Focuses on the challenges and solutions facing the business of medicine, and provides an introduction to the current issues facing the healthcare sector that integrates management tools and clinical knowledge.
Health Economics and Policy (B53 321) - Covers the basic tenets of health economics and emphasizes ma- terials from three broad source categories: textbook elements, lay press and media, and academic journal pub- lications.
Healthcare Management (B53 322) - Develops facility in applying basic tenets of general management to actual situations and dilemmas that might be faced by healthcare managers, consultants, financiers, investors, innovators, or providers. Issues addressed will include but not be limited to financial issues, management chal- lenges, and conduct of operations.
Research in Healthcare Management (B53 420) - Students learn to apply rigorous statistical and analytical approaches to research questions in health services, but not limited to questions relating to management, finance, and economics, operations and policy.

I don’t know a single Olin student that has only one major, so you’ll probably build on the healthcare mgt major with something more specialized in finance, HR, marketing, etc. I’d imagine that some pre-med students end up pursuing this major, as well as people who are interested in pursuing Public Health or social work.

thanks for the info! so i can major in health care management and stay in artsci (im not so crazy about accounting and finance . . .). do i also need an artsci major or can i just do a public health minor?

Yes it is! My son was admitted to ArtSci 2 years ago and decided at the beginning of the summer before freshman year that he wanted to switch to Olin. He contacted the Director of Admissions who responded the same day and a confirming letter was sent to him within several days. You can’t get any easier than that.

thats great! blackeyedsusan, was your son able to talk to an advisor before starting freshman year? an advisor could answer my questions about being a nonbusiness health care management major

You’d obviously have to complete an Artsci major if you were in Artsci.

texangirl - over the summer, every one of Wash U’s colleges will contact the incoming students with their advisor’s info.

If you are an incoming freshman in Art Sci, you will be invited to one of several “Art Sci summer weekends” (I still think they are called that). Vast majority of incoming Art Sci freshman participate. You stay on campus for a few days in the summer with couple hundred other incoming freshman. There are a lot of social events and you get to meet people before classes begin… but you also receive an overview of the Art Sci curriculum and all the majors, you meet with your advisor, register for fall classes, make sure AP credits transfer and deal with placement exams for Calc, etc. It was very well put together.

There’s also the typical week of freshman orientation where that stuff can be taken care of, if you couldn’t go to an Art Sci weekend and didn’t bother to contact your advisor in the summer (which I’d find hard to believe if that happened).

It’ll take you about ~1-1.5 days to switch (you have to find a few forms).

It was a little harder for me actually. I was in the exact situation as you a year ago and the director of admissions wouldn’t let me transfer to Olin until I took Math 131/132. On top of that, my ArtSci advisor discouraged me from transferring, saying there were other options and it was more practical to stay in ArtSci. I don’t blame him though considering he probably loses money for each advisee that transfers to a different school.

I really, really, really, (x100) doubt (in fact I know) advisors lose money for advisees that transfer.

You’re probably right but there was obviously a reason he didn’t want me transferring.
