Transfer chance

I am a student at a Washington State community College. I want to transfer to Berkeley for Fall 2013 in order to study Computer Science. I have a GPA of 3.85 but I don't know what that will transfer to be at Berkeley. I am member of several clubs at my school and have had an internship. Please give me a general idea if I will be able to get into Berkeley and the Computer Science department. Also, please let me know what I can do to improve my chances and if my work in high school counts in transfer admissions. Thank you.

High school isn’t considered for transfer admission (assuming you’ll have two years of CC). Being out of state definitely hurts your chances. Biggest factors for getting in are generally GPA (you’re okay-ish there) and pre-reqs. You can look at assist.org to find what lower division courses you’re expected to have, though you’ll have to guess on what will actually transfer. CS61A and CS70 you can’t really take before transferring. Also, figure out if you want to apply to L&S CS or EECS, the requirements for them are different.

As for actual chances, I have no idea. If you were at a California CC, you’d have a really good chance, but I’m not sure how well that translates to out of state. Also, out of state tuition is a bit ridiculous, not sure if you’ve looked into that yet or not…

Thanks for the help. It’s good to hear that High School isn’t considered because I did pretty poorly in HS. I think I want to go into the L&S CS program but I’m not entirely sure how it is different from EECS. Is the EECS program what Berkeley is known for or is it the L&S CS program? When you say I have a good chance, do you mean to get into Berkeley or the CS departments? I know it is a ton of money but I’m trying to keep my options open for right now and choose later. Besides, they only good CS school I know of in Washington State is the University of Washington which is incredibly competitive, especially if you aren’t paying extra as an OOS or international student. Why do you say that CS61A and CS70 won’t transfer? I don’t know how it works at Berkeley but they look like they are the first two CS classes you take. The first one ending with arrays and classes, the second one dealing with data structures. Am I wrong in thinking that? I will have taken those classes before going to Berkeley. Would I need to retake them?

61A and 70 most likely won’t transfer since there is no articulation available for 70 offered by CCs and from my experience, the only college with articulation for 61A is Laney College here in Oakland. This is because 61A has a curriculum that isn’t covered by basic language courses you take in most CCs. CS70 used to be satisfied with a class in discrete math but this has been changed in 2011. 61B is data structures and can usually be satisfied in a CC. For the most part, many transfers end up having to take at least 61A, 61C and 70 when they enter with EECS transfers also having to satisfy EE20 and 40.

EECS and LS CS will be the same thing if you’re focused in CS. EECS might have a slight advantage since it’s a BS as opposed to a BA but that’s only with very picky recruiters.

I believe EECS is a little more competitive than L&S, but it should be pretty similar. Either program is really good, both majors have to take a lot of the same classes, but there are a couple differences between them. Generally speaking, L&S students take more humanities, while EECS takes more engineering/sciences.

Differences between programs: [Degree Programs | EECS at UC Berkeley](Academics | EECS at UC Berkeley)
Super detailed requirements for everything EECS: http://www.eecs.berkeley.edu/Programs/Notes/11-12ugradhandbook.pdf</a>
L&S CS Requirements (not super detailed, not sure where the full list is): [General Catalog - Computer Science (Letters & Science)](http://general-catalog.berkeley.edu/catalog/gcc_view_req?p_dept_cd=COMSCLS)
L&S Breadth requirements (needed for L&S, not EECS): [Office of Undergraduate Advising: Summary of Degree Requirements](http://ls-advise.berkeley.edu/requirement/summary.html)

On 61A/70, as much as retaking stuff sucks, you’ll be glad if you do have to do it. I had 61A (and 61B) over the summer, and it’s much more in depth than any course I had had before, and includes projects like writing interpreters, and building object oriented functionality from functions. You’ll also get introductions to things like networking and logic programming in the course. There’s a reason they don’t accept CC credit for some classes.

On chances: Again, I told you I’m not really sure. Being out of state does hurt you a bit, since priority is given to California CC students. You might have better luck asking in the UC Transfers section of the forums for that one.
