I am not happy at my college, and I am strongly considering transferring for next fall. I am currently a freshman at a small liberal arts college on the east coast that has a good academic reputation. However, due to low transfer acceptance rates of other liberal arts colleges, I am considering larger colleges and universities. Notre Dame is toward the top of my list. I'm looking to transfer into the school of sciences or the school of arts and letters. What are my chances? Are there any other universities similar to Notre Dame that I should consider? I'm not a great test taker which worries me a bit...are SATs and ACTs very important when applying as a transfer to ND? I read about transferring on their website, but I'd still like a little more input.

High School Statistics
High School Profile: Independent school (public and private...I know, a little confusing haha), ~2500 - 2600 kids, great academic reputation in area
GPA (weighted): 4.2 (maintained 4.1 - 4.4 throughout junior and senior years)
Rank: 6 out of 528
SAT: 1930 (670 CR, 600 M, 660 W)
ACT: 29 (33 E, 29 S, 25 M, 29? H)
AP Scores: English (5 and 4), U.S. History (3), AP Studio Art (4)
Course Load: took mainly honors, early college experience (ECE), and AP classes; took language and art courses for four years
Other stuff: member of national honor society, involved in a few clubs, 4 year member of 2 varsity sports, several athletic/scholar-athlete awards, several art awards, some community service background

Any comments would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Hi cblanch 5. I applied to transfer to Notre Dame last year, and as my creds were pretty similar to yours, I thought Id share my story. I am now a junior, but when I actually applied, I was a first semester sophmore at a relatively well known liberal arts school in Massachusetts. Because Notre Dame will still take your high school credentials into account, I figured I list mine as a comparison:

High School Statistics
High School: Public school 2400 kids
GPA: 3.74
Rank: 5 out of 519
SAT: 1970
ACT: 30
Course Load: took all honors and AP classes; took language for four years
Other stuff: member of national honor society, national Latin honor society, editor of the yearbook, on the newspaper staff, and member of the varisty golf team. I was also involved in community service and received my Eagle Scout during my senior year.

College Statistics:
College: One of the better liberal arts schools in the Northeast
GPA: 3.65 (received a 4.0 during the semester in which I applied to Notre Dame)
Major: Anthropology
Other stuff: Member of the rugby team, and volunteer for a program which helps tutor african refugee children on weekends.

Heres the Bad news: I was rejected by Notre Dame. But here is the good news. I didnt do everything possible to boost my application, and that may be one of the reasons I didnt get accepted. If I could offer any tips, this is what they would be:

RETAKE YOUR STANDARDIZED TESTS: Notre Dame places a big emphasis on these, especially the SAT. Retaking them not only provides you with the possibility of doing better, but it also shows initiative. (I didnt retake my standardized tests)

Get a good letter of recommendation: even though youve only been in school for a few semesters, find the best professor possible to write a recommendation. (when i applied it was optional, and therefore I didnt do it - big mistake on my part)
3.This isnt so much a tip as it is basic info - the college of arts and letters will probably be the easiest to get into, and in fact, i dont think they are accepting transfers into the business or engineering schools.

Good luck if you havent already applied

thanks nhgolfer21! i really appreciate your input. I’m actually considering applying next semester because i play a sport in the spring and want to see if that makes things any better…or maybe i’ll just end up liking this place more than expected. did you end up transferring at all? or did you consider any other colleges or universities when you applied to transfer to ND? I’m looking for colleges on the same tier as ND, or perhaps a little less selective (my credentials give me more of a chance at a slightly lower level). It’s just hard finding high level schools with decent transfer admission rates. if you have any suggestions that would be great.

thanks!
