@transfer91: So, um, CC just ate my reply, so I’m just going to try to remember what I’d said earlier.

Advising here is amazing, absolutely amazing. The deans are great and accessible, and the advisers actually care. Orientation was well organized, but it’s pretty dull the second time around. There are cool social activities during it that’re worth checking out, but if you don’t want to, nothing’s mandatory on the events list anyway (even if they say it is).

Academically, I’d have to answer specific questions to really be of any use, but as for generalities, the coursework here is strong, demanding, but not too demanding. There’s very little busy work, and generally everything you read is readily applicable and helpful to understanding the material. (Columbia classes, in comparison, tend to assign busy work, though on the upside, doing it also boosts your grade–but then, I’ve only taken a year’s worth of classes so far, so it’s hard to say.) Some classes are phenomenal, some I just stopped going to.

Social scene is pretty good and pretty diverse. From what I’ve been told, we’re a lot straighter than the rest of the seven sisters. I live in Elliot on one of the transfer floors, and everyone was friendly and eager to make friends at the start. The Barnard non-transfers are great too, and they don’t care if you’re a transfer or not (if anyone ends up choosing between Columbia and Barnard, just as a heads-up, there definitely is a Columbia transfer bubble, though that probably has a lot to do with their core).

liaku, are you an Economics major by any chance? I’m really interested in pursuing an Econ major at Barnard but I’m wondering what my course load with be like given the fact that we transfers also must fulfill Barnard gen ed requirements

@Nerdygirl: I transferred from Boston College. Adjusting was easy for me, but I moved around a lot growing up. It really is as painless a transition as it gets though. All the other transfers that you’re with for the first few days are consciously trying to start off on the right foot, and advising will hold your hand through everything.

@transfer91: I’m a European Studies major, and I haven’t had experience with the Econ department here yet. I don’t think you have to stress about taking care of all the gen ed reqs though. I came in with no AP credits, and at Boston College, I doubled up on languages, plus I took both politics and econ for two semesters each, both of which count for the same req–AND I withdrew from my science lab class. By the end this this semester, I’ll actually have all my gen ed reqs over and done with, so you’ll probably be fine.

@transfer91 I don’t know if it matters, what they told me when I went to visit was that getting your app in earlier doesn’t mean getting a decision earlier.

Hello everyone. I hadn’t thought to check for a transfer thread until just now, but I’m so happy to see one. Hopefully we won’t have much waiting to do together from this point, but it’s nice not to be alone. Good luck to you all!

i feel so alone at my school regarding transferring. I know there are others who are looking to transfer out but this waiting for Barnard is getting me really anxious. I hope we all get our letters this week or the week after

transfer91, I’m sorry you feel alone. I can assure you that there are lots of other people out there who are unhappy with their current institutions. But I think you will have to wait a little longer than a week or two for the decision.

Is anyone still missing dates on their tracking page? I’m worried.
