Hello! I need some reassurance about my chances to getting into UT this fall. I'll be applying for everything tomorrow.

16 hrs and I'll be taking 14 hrs this spring semester.
-GPA: 4.0
-I'll be applying to petroleum engineering as my first major and geosciences for the second.

College:

Volunteer hrs- 50 hours only in college.
-I don't have any rec letters. I don't know a lot of professors well enough to ask them for a rec letter. I don't know if it will benefit me a lot.

I posted a shorter version of my resume above. Hope it's not too messy. Along with my stats, I do have a few questions to ask about the UT admissions. My essays are all done and I'll be submitting my online app in a day or two. I'm worried. Even though I have a 4.0, Do you guys think I'll be able to get into petroleum engineering with it? I don't have any rec letters. Would that harm my chances of getting in to my major? I know I'll be receiving my decision pretty late because UT admissions said they'd have to wait for my final transcript after I finish my 14 hours in the spring semester. I also have a couple more questions. I do want to transfer into engineering. But I heard that if I put another field of engineering major as my second choice, then UT won't consider me again for my second choice major. For example: If my first major is petroleum engr and my second is mechanical engr. IF UT decides to reject me from my first major, will they RECONSIDER me for my second major? which is another engineering major (Mechanical engineering). I'm really worried. Hope my stats are good enough and what I said is understood. Thanks for the help in advance!

Your chances look great, but do you have your calculus credits? To transfer into engineering, you MUST have calculus completed by enrollment into UT. I do not recommend applying for the same school for both majors, due to the fact that they all mostly have the same prereqs except for EE. (If I’m not mistaken) Also, how do your essays look? And is there any way that you could ask anyone from your volunteer places to write you a letter of recommendation? The letters could really help your chances.

Yes, Sir! I do have the Calc requirements completed. Yeah that’s true. I guess then I’ll apply for geoscience as my second major. And my essays are complete. I got them done. I’m just passing it around for proofreading and stuff. I plan on submitting all the required things tomorrow. If not, by Tuesday MAX. I don’t know if I should get rec letters from them. I mean also the people who write our rec letters, shouldn’t they be good at writing rec letters in the first place? Just curious about that. Oh and how many rec letters should we get? Is one rec letter enough? Or more than one? Thanks for the quick reply!

Awkward moment when I’m a girl, haha… Yes, they should be good at writing LOR’s but any kind of LOR will be useful. 1 is okay, 2 is good, and 3 is great! I wouldn’t suggest writing it yourself and asking them to sign it. It is a way for them to express how good of a student you could be at UT. You have until March 1st to turn them in. It’s not something you have to have before submitting your application.

Oh…haha, Yes Ma’am will be my answer then. Hmm I’ll try to get a couple of LOR’s then. Other than my LOR’s, according to you, what do you are my chances of getting accepted to petroleum engr. 50%? Give me a number cause that really convinces me and calms me down since I’m really worried at this point. Thanks Saborak!!

Honestly I think you have an awesome chance of getting in probably 80%. You should definitely look at the prereqs for the engineering school and make sure you have everything for transfer though. Also, See if there is an admissions office there in Houston and make an appointment to go see them. They will be able to answer any other questions you may have.

Oh thanks for the percentage! That makes me feel so much better. I’ll definitely call UT and check if they have an admissions office in houston. I just hope to make it into my first major then. I have checked the prereqs for engineering which is pretty much Calc 1 and 2 and I already have those done. Other than that, there is no other prereqs for engineering in specific. But i’ll call UT and check again with them just to make sure.

I got your PM. Thanks a lot, Saborak! You have no idea how much this helped! :D
