Transfer Fall 2014

Anyone out there started the transfer app for next fall?

bumpbump…maybe too early:/…

I’m applying for next fall!

Yay! Maybe if all goes well, we will see each other there next year! I just started the essays, but a little concerned that they look at high school grades heavily:/ eek. Just hoping that this next semester is on par with last semester…

Yeah! I started my essays a couple of days ago! I think they look more at everything as a whole rather than just one thing in particular. Let’s hope for the best for the both of us!

I’m applying for next fall as well!

Are you all Freshman? I am. Hs GPA was around 3.6-not so great, but college prep w/tough grading scale, if that makes any difference-and college GPA is around a 3.9. However, I have heard that there is a residency period, sometimes up to two years, on campus wherever you transfer, which would hinder study abroad, etc. I was thinking study abroad for a year, then transfer, and if I get in this year, great! but defer a year and then start up fall junior year. Does anyone see that as irrational? idk…it makes sense in my head.

I’m currently a sophomore at a community college, so I’ll be transferring in as a junior if they accept all of my credits. I went to the open house in October, and there’s definitely a two year residency period. However, I think that if you transfer in as a sophomore you should be fine, as people typically study abroad during their junior year. I don’t think your plan sounds irrational at all – if you have the opportunity to study abroad now, I would totally go for it. As far deferring admissions, if I were you I’d check to make sure that transfers have the opportunity to defer. I know that some schools (Vassar) don’t allow it.

Thanks for the advice ulciscor. I will definitely have to check on deferring!

I’m filling out the transfer app as well (incoming sophomore). I also applied to Columbia and I don’t think I have a great chance of getting in AT ALL, stats are weak (though I’m pretty involved, taking 19 credits as a freshman this semester and have a job; I can get very strong recs and display great strength in English, which is what I want to study). I’m hoping that they truly consider everything holistically and not just my low GPA (I had a little - okay, a lot - of trouble in Astronomy).

Hey fscottfitzgerald! We’re sort of in the same boat – my HS stats and SATs are pretty weak, but I’m hoping that my strong recs and success in college will overshadow that. I considered applying to Columbia for a while, but I’ve decided that Barnard is where I truly want to be. From what I’ve been able to find out, it seems like admissions are truly holistic. I’m interested in studying English as well. Good luck!

How are you guys doing with your supplements?

I’m applying Fall 2014 too, as a junior transfer. I’m beyond nervous, and if anyone would be so kind as to offer me their opinion on my chances, I’d greatly appreciate it.
From a small university in the Bay Area, in my third semester and have a 3.83 gpa.
27 on my ACT (I think that’s pretty low for Barnard standards)
~3.89 weighted in high school.

I have a few extracurriculars, and some impressive ones from high school. I’d be applying as political science, by the way. Please let me know what you think! The suspense is killing me and I haven’t even sent in the app yet.

I’m actually having a little trouble with the Barnard supplements. The Columbia ones came easily to me, because I think ideally that’s where I want to end up, although I’m highly attracted to Barnard as well. I’m just afraid I’ll get lost in the pool of really strong women that apply! And I’ve only recently become a women’s rights activist/formed my own opinions on all that stuff and I know that you don’t have to be like a raging feminist to go to Barnard, but I think having a strong stance on women’s issues certainly helps. I’m just scared that I won’t be able to utilize that aspect of the education to the fullest!

The second supplement, with the Margarate Mead quote, is puzzling me. Is that one stumping anyone else? I at least know how to start the other ones.

I’m having the same problem. D’you reckon they’re looking for something you’re passionate about (for me, music)? Or is it more like “what’s one of your unique personal qualities” type of thing? Perhaps it’s up for interpretation…

Hey guys, sorry for the late response. I’m pretty sure that question is up for interpretation – it’s asking how you personally would add to the community, so I think that would include both your extracurricular activities and personal qualities.

I sent in my app a week before the deadline and I have yet to receive my tracking info. I know I’m probably being paranoid but has anyone else received their tracking ids yet?

Received mine yesterday. Regular decision was just notified today so I’m sure the office of admissions has been really busy. I wouldn’t worry about it. Is anyone else freaking out/second guessing themselves?

Well…I’m feeling pretty good about my overall application. I am nervous though because I need a significant amount of financial aid, and I know that financial need is considered a factor in the admissions decision. I hope everything works in my favor because if Barnard doesn’t work out, then I’d pretty much be going to Hunter for financial reasons, but I can’t be too sure that I’ll get in. Best of luck to everyone!

Yes! Good luck! I am just wondering how much it matters what school one is transferring from. I come from a relatively unknown university, I think. So I am just curious as to whether someone’s GPA would be, in a sense, weighted higher than mine because they came from a better-ranked institution.
