Transfer from Engineering to Mendoza

My son was accepted to ND/Engineering. He was torn between applying to Engineering or Mendoza, but his college advisor suggested he apply to school of engineering (in hindsight he should have put down Mendoza as first choice and Engineering as second choice). He always had a strong interest in business and after touring the campus last week he’s even more eager to transfer into Mendoza. He realizes how competitive it will be to transfer into Mendoza at the end of his first year and this alone may influence his decision to attend another school where he is already accepted into their business school. His biggest concern is if he doesn’t like Engineering it will be highly unlikely he will be able to transfer into Mendoza because it’s extremely competitive. Is this something he should discuss with a ND admissions counselor and maybe they’d let him transfer into Mendoza now? Just want to add that my son is honored to be accepted to ND and would love to attend, he’s just concerned he may not be able to enter Mendoza after the fact. Any advice?

Same situation, and I tried to get pre-approved couple weeks ago, but got the same answer from every admissions person: apply after first year. As a result, I am hesitant on attending ND, and just go to a school I’m guaranteed to its business school already. I’m not sure if the risk is worth it.

Three’s company, I guess. I’m facing the same situation. What makes it even more frustrating for me was that I contacted my admissions person to transfer in December, before the RD admissions process even began.

I don’t want to play Russian roulette with this Mendoza game during my freshman year. I’m still debating with two other great schools (Rice and Duke) at this point, and having this in the back of my mind is tipping the scales away from ND. When I’m paying $62K a year, I want to know what I’m getting when I submit my enrollment deposit and limit the surprises.

@silverdrop go to Duke dude. Duke is much better of a school than ND, and even more as you’re not in Mendoza.

@JHuff11 I visited Duke and did not like it at all. It was definitely not for me. While it may be a “better school”, I do not want to be miserable for the next four years of life.

@JHuff11 IMO I don’t think its that much better at all… They are neck and neck academically with Duke having the slight edge… Although not for everyone, ND offers a unique opportunity for personal and academic growth unrivaled by any other university; it truly strives to educate the whole person.

@coffeegal ND Econ is not bad either if he ends up having to do that and its probably still worth it if he feels ND is the best place for him… But if he is that serious about Business and likes the other school he should go to the other school

Current student here (but College of Science). I haven’t heard of anyone having trouble transferring into Mendoza as long as you sign up for the right classes (you only need stats and econ). One of my friends was a bio major first semester but switched to business second semester and I declared to Mendoza after his first year.

I know they are changing it a bit, but I can’t imagine that it will be too much harder to switch than it is right now.

I would go to the place that you feel the most at home/the place that fits you best.

Im on the same boat as everyone else. Im leaning toward attending (but really not sure) just becasue ND has been a dream school for a while, but if you guys were accepted to other business schools, are set on doing business, and did not get into Mendoza, going to anouther school just might be more logical. This is a tough decision for everyone, and it is hard to pass up on such a great experiance, but in some cases it might be worth it. Still not sure what I will do…

@ picklechicken37 I’m happy to hear that you heard of successful transfers into Mendoza, although I think a lot has changed and Mendoza now has a cap of 550. From my understanding we don’t pick our first year classes (at least first semester), so in my son’s case he’s in engineering so won’t they automatically put him in a couple engineering classes to keep him on track should he decide to stay in engineering? How would he go about taking stats and econ unless he spoke to admissions beforehand about his desire to transfer to Mendoza?

Did all of you apply to Mendoza and get put in your second choice?

Its either ND (not Mendoza) or NYU Stern / UCLA for me. Tough decision considering I am not guaranteed to Mendoza

@picklechicken37 I talked to multiple admissions people and they said the process to internal transfer with this new policy will be rather an extremely difficult and competitive process

@JHuff11 sorry if you already answered this, but did you apply to Mendoza and get put in your second choice?

@coffeegal No, I didn’t even put Mendoza as a choice, since I was 100% that I would do poli sci. in hindsight, that was a bad decision haha. But a friend of a friend of mine, did Mendoza 1st choice, but was put in his second choice in Arts and Letters Econ.

I do not really like the business majors except for Finance, and Finance majors will be based upon first two years academic performance. Therefore, we both might just stick with Econ and take business classes in Mendoza as electives.

My admissions person said that 10% (50-55) slots will be available for internal transfers.

Wow only 10% – hopefully a lot of students transfer out of Mendoza! A few more questions for anyone who thinks they can answer them:

  1. Do those who originally applied to Mendoza, but had to go to their second choice, have priority (or go on a waiting list) over those who didn't apply to Mendoza?
  2. Do all internal students have priority over external transfers?
  3. Does admissions need to know in advance that you want to transfer into Mendoza so they can plan your first year courses accordingly?
  4. Is it an equal playing field for all first years who want to transfer into Mendoza and solely based on academic standing, etc?

Hi, current student here. I just wanted to point out that a lot of Engineering majors also do a business minor. My roommate is in Engineering and is also pursuing a Business minor. This means that in addition to their Engineering classes, they use some of their elective spaces in their schedule to take introductory classes in Accounting, Finance, and Management. So that is another option for your son if he wants to attend ND and not transfer into Mendoza.

I have already enrolled next year, and I plan on majoring in Aerospace Engineering. For me choosing ND was a no brainer, and it also turned out to be my cheapest choice (they truly do meet your financial need).
Even though I’ve always liked (and been good at) math/science and been fascinated with planes/the universe, I’m a little nervous about pursuing this degree and whether or not I will enjoy it. I’m sure if I work hard I will do well, but I do not know if I will enjoy it.
Business was my second option, but if I do not like Engineering–which I sincerely hope does not happen–I will probably head into Econ if I could not transfer into Mendoza (I just realized Econ was not in Mendoza).
However, I think we should head into ND with the attitude that we will enjoy our Engineering majors. Simply being accepted into Notre Dame proves that we are capable of pursuing our respective Engineering majors, and if we enjoy science and math all the hard work will pay off in the end.

Econ is a good choice if you cannot get into Finance. As long as it is in the realm of finance/accounting/econ, you are fine.
