I'm a freshman at NYU (Gallatin), and I am not a fan so far. I want to apply to a few schools for transfer just in case NYU doesn't grow on me. USC is one of the top schools I am interested in, but I've heard USC is tough for OOS applicants. Does anybody know what the stats are like for accepted transfer applicants? Will my college academic record or high school record be weighted more heavily? I just want to get everything sorted out now so I'm not stressing later. Any help would be awesome.

USC is a private school. Whether you are in-state or out-of-state doesn’t matter.

Since you will be applying to transfer after just one year your high school record will be considered. Your college GPA is important. The average college GPA of transfers is 3.7 the last I saw.

What is your specific field of interest? Some majors require a portfolio or audition in addition to the completed application. In the transfer section on CC is a long thread on USC transfers. You might find that helpful.

SC has a true campus, with a more “laid back” vibe than NYU, in my opinion. Try to visit the campus, take a tour and meet with an academic advisor, if possible. The university encourages double majors and multidisciplinary study. Los Angeles is a vibrant city with much to offer. The warmer weather allows for outdoor sports, events or activities all year.

I’m an NYU transfer (stern). I was choosing between NYU and USC and I decided like week 2 of NYU that I made the wrong choice, and now I’m at USC! And yeah since USC is a private school it doesn’t matter if you are in state or out of state.

If you are applying for next fall, then your high school record will be looked at including your SAT/ACT. This is in addition to your first semester at NYU so try to do your best! and don’t look at the “average college GPA” because that number is inflated since there are so many transfer kids from california community colleges.

pm me any specific questions

Why did you transfer out of stern? What was bad about the experience?

for an undergrad experience, NYU doesn’t offer one. NYU tries to say that the city can substitute for the college experience but it can’t. You can live in the city whenever you want to, but you can only have a college experience once. I really liked the city and it’s not like it won’t be there after I graduate. A lot of people ask me why I would transfer out of Stern since it is a better program… but for being an undergraduate it really doesn’t matter that much, I just need to keep my grades up and I’ll still be competitive for getting a job/or going to grad school

I 100% agree with you! I’m a current freshman in CAS (not into the lack of classic college experience) and starting my transfer apps now :)
