I am in my first year of college at a cc and plan on transferring by fall 2017. I know this is a bit early for me to be thinking about it right now, but I like planning ahead. My expected GPA this semester will be a 2.09, very low, I know. But in the Spring 2015 I am retaking two failed classes and they will be completly erased from my GPA when I retake them. My question is, how does the transfer process work? If I do not complete all prereqs by next fall, will spring prereqs count? If my GPA isn't where I want it to be when I apply, will my Fall grades (which will be in progress) count towards the GPA? What would be considered the GPA needed to get into UCB and UCSD?

Pre-reqs can be taken any time before transferring (except the summer before you’re at UC). Some schools might request that specific pre-reqs be completed before Spring, but that’ll depend on UC and major. Yes, your Fall GPA will matter, that goes in the January update. Spring grades matter in a different way, it’s not part of decisions but you need to keep your grades up to meet the terms and conditions of acceptance.

GPA: Higher is better, obviously. For UCB I’d say you should probably aim for at least 3.5+ if you want any chance, but their holistic process makes admissions a little unpredictable. I’m not quite as familiar with UCSD but it’s the same idea, higher GPA means better chances. Your major matters too, some are more selective than others.

If you are applying for a competitive major, you want to complete as many prereqs by the Fall you apply.
