This is really two questions...1) Anyone have any experience with transferring into USC and 2) the school of Journalism and Mass Media.

My D spent the summer as news dept. intern at CBS 3 in Philadelphia. She is now soph. communications major at a smalll LAC and has her heart set on transferring to a bigger school in D.C.

But while discussing transfer at CBS, a couple times, professionals whom she really respected mentioned USC....she said 'mom...I need to look into this school. '

I hope to fly her down mid-fall to see for herself and hopefully get someone from the department to meet with her. But we would really like the inside scoop if there is anyone with knowledge of coming 'not as a new freshman' and especially any comments on the Journalism program, size of classes, do the Profs know your name?

Random comments ---I do not have firsthand knowledge about the Journalism school except that the Dean of the School, Charles Bierbauer (sp?) was a former national news reporter for CNN I believe. Also that Columbia is in relative close proximity to Atlanta which is headquarters for CNN so I imagine many students eventually find themselves interning there.
Recently USC hosted the National College Democrats Convention here. We had Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama and John Edwards come and speak to us. Because our primary is early we have had many of the candidates visit our state. My daughter met Rudy Giuliani last year in Greenville.
Another point to make is that all the state lawmakers convene in Columbia's state capitol during the year. We get lots of news about laws being debated and passed. USC is just up the street from the statehouse.

the local ABC affiliate is located withinn walking distance to campus as well.
Don't know about Broadcast Journalism but S is a Sports Mgmt major, beginning 2nd year and knows many profs by name already, and they him.As a matter of fact, hes acting as a "seat filler" for one of them tomorrow night at the Colonial Center when the WWF (or whatever its called nowadays) comes through on its tour. They give him a free ticket, and when someone in a seat in range of the camera (its televised) gets up, he moves to that seat and fills it until they return,so there isnt empty space on TV.They do this at the Academy Awards too!!!

As I recall, both the undergrad J School and Public Relations dept within J school are top 10-15 programs. Not sure where broadcast journalism area ranks but overall school is highly regarded.

DD originally was investigating these areas before discovering USC's top 3 Sports Management program.
