Transfer Kelley Requirements Question

Hi,

I'm currently interested in attending IUB as a transfer student and hope to eventually be accepted into Kelley. I've looked into the pre req's and iCore classes and I plan on taking some of the classes before next fall. I was reading on their website that i would need the following to apply

-Completion of ENG-W 131 Elementary Composition (or equivalent).- (I've taken the equivalent)
-Completion of three or more of the following admissions courses:
-MATH-M 118 Finite Mathematics - (Currently taking the equivalent)
-MATH-M 119 Brief Survey of Calculus - (Taken the equivalent)
-BUS-K 201 The Computer in Business- will take at IU
-BUS-X 100 Introduction to Business Administration OR BUS-G 100 Business in the Information Age- Will take at IU

I'm wondering since I've taken/taking these math classes, will I have to take them again at IUB or will the classes I've taken already count towards the pre req's for Kelley admission.

I've tried contacting the school through phone/email and it's been very difficult to get a straight answer.

I currently have a 3.5 GPA and was previously admitted to IU.

By the time starting IUB I will have these classes taken

Accounting 1- equivalent to A201- 4cr
Accounting 2- A202- 4cr
Business Calc 1 equivalent to Math M-119- 4cr.
Finite Math equivalent to Math M-118- 4cr.
Freshman English- equivalent to eng-w131- 3cr.
Astronomy- Astro-100- 3cr.
Psych 101- Psych 101- 3 cr.
Public Speaking- bus-x 104- 3cr.
Business Law- Bus-L 200?- 3cr.
A history class, not sure what it transfers as- 3 cr.
ELECTR 224- transfers in as an technology elective- 3cr.

Total 37 cr. hours

I hope you don’t go to DePaul, where I think you might go now per one of your posts. For some reason IU/Kelley does not like DePaul classes at all for transfer. You can check at the transfer credit website. I don’t think they will accept your accounting, business law, and math classes. So transferring to IU will be like starting college all over. These classes may not transfer because DePaul is on the quarter system. Some of the transfer credit they do accept works out to like 2.5 credits for a three-credit class, so the quarter system may be the problem. Way more classes transfer to IU from a community college like the College of Lake County than DePaul.

Well you are right about the credit transferring to IUB, they don’t give you the same amount of hours but surprisingly all of the classes that I took at DePaul will transfer. I’ve used the course converter you posted a while back, it said I would receive no credit for one class but when I called they said it would count as a history class. I took six classes at DePaul so I’m still getting 15 hours, and the school is fantastic and I had great professors. The negatives were that I felt that I was too close to home, and since I started school I’ve changed what I want to major in (DePaul doesn’t offer a straight route like IUB does) . A big reason that I went to DePaul was for the honors program, the internship opportunities in the city, and the scholarships. I transferred to a community college and made sure all of the classes I’m taking now transfer. There are a lot of reasons behind my decision but I think I’d just be better off at a bigger school. After talking to a counselor I was given the hours I posted below, so it seems like a good opportunity to take advantage of. I also have some AP credit. Do you know if I would have to take three of those four classes at IUB? It doesn’t say (equivalent) next to it like ENG-W 131 does so I’m not sure. Thanks for the info though :)

The classes they gave you full three-credit hours for you shouldn’t have to retake, meaning M118 and M119. You definitely need K201 first semester. They will evaluate your Kelley application based on your first semester class performance at IU and of course your grades at Depaul and the cc. I would definitely find out from the admissions office if W131 has to be taken. You definitely need that class or a transfer equivalent before Kelley will accept you.

You should take accounting A100 first semester, as it is an Icore prerequisite. You need to take it even if you have already taken A201 and A202. Take K201 first semester, as it is a prerequisite for another icore technology prerequisite, X202. Do you have an equivalent for BUS X104; if not you need to take it first semester and then X204 your second one. Also, you need microeconomics (ECON E202; can get transfer credit probably from your local cc) before they will let you take BUS G202, which is another Icore prerequisite.

It is tough to give advice without knowing for certain what transfers for you. You should contact admissions and maybe get in writing a list of what transfers.

Thank you so much. I really want to get into Kelley after my first semester and I’ve read that K201 is not too easy of a class. I plan on taking A-100 Bus-X 100 (to fill the requirement to apply) and then some classes that would be pretty easy so I wouldn’t have to worry about getting anything below a B. I’ll probably take a sociology class and whatever else i can take to be registered for the minimum number of hours. I have credit for macro and micro econ from when i took the AP test. I don’t have to take W-131, I have taken the equivalent. The public speaking class I’m taking counts as Bus-X 104. Thank you so much for all of the information, it makes me a lot less stressed. You know quite a lot about Kelley and IU, are there any classes that you suggest I take to get my hours for first semester. I don’t necessarily mind being in school for five years. I want to get certified to teach high school classes for some time in the future so I will be minoring in education.

You might take the classes below first semester. X204 is very easy grading in is required for Icore; hard to get less than a solid B in that class. F101 Intro to Folklore class gpa was high the last two semesters with two different profs, between 3.4 and 3.55, with only about ten percent of the class getting lower than a solid B. And you have already fulfilled the N&M requirement with psychology and astronomy.
BUS A100 (1 cr.)
BUS K201 (3 cr.)
BUS X204 (3 cr.)
BUS G202 (2 cr.)
FOLK F101 (3 cr.) Satisfies part of the Arts & Humanities requirement

You could even substitute G202 with BUS X220, which is 90%+ solid A every semester, but it might make your schedule look too easy. If you got good AP scores in econ, then you should have no trouble with G202, which is like a watered down microeconomics class.

Definitely take A100 first eight weeks, in case you have trouble with it and need to take it second eight weeks, which probably won’t happen since you have A201 and A202 already.

Then, your second semester you would only have to take X220 and ECON E370 to be ready to take Icore Fall semester of junior year and be on pace to graduate in four years. The same semester you can take three or four liberal arts courses (ask your adviser for two COAS classes which “double-count” for the distribution option requirement and the International Dimension), as X220 is very easy and meets only eight weeks.
