Transfer opportunities for international student in the USA

Hello,
I am an international student. I want to know about the transfer opportunities for international students in the US. Given that I will need significant financial aid from the college, I feel my chances of finding a college is pretty low.

Can someone suggest me some colleges that accept comparatively large number of international transfer students and offers healthy financial aid.

Thanks.

While the definition of ā€˜large numberā€™ and ā€˜healthyā€™ vary from one person to the next, I would say there are likely no schools that fit this description. As an Intl. transfer applicant, only the most selective colleges offer generous FA, and of course they have very low transfer admission rates.

It might be asking a lot of you, but can you name some of those colleges.
Also, I havenā€™t started college as of yet so can you tell me where I need to be as far as my college GPA and scores are concerned to at least have a decent shot at those colleges. And any other things that would make my application strong.

You will not qualify for financial aid as an international student as you need to have a US social security number to apply. Also, to qualify for a US student visa, you have to show sufficient means to afford the tuition. The caveat here is if you have a very high GPA and can qualify for a merit scholarship. You have to check the colleges/universities to which you are applying that might offer scholarships based on merit.

Well, I applied this year and didnā€™t get in any college despite my decent stats. So, what suggestion would you have for someone like me who wants to study in a US college that offers good financial aid and would not like to take a gap year?

See [What Financial Aid Is Available for International Students? - College Admissions Q&As (usnews.com)](http://www.usnews.com/education/blogs/college-admissions-experts/2012/01/04/what-financial-aid-is-available-for-international-students)

Yes for Federal FA. However the schools I was referring to in my post are privates that offer Institutional FA to Intl. students.

OP, read the Resources sticky thread on the FA & Scholarship forum, it has a link to schools with FA for Intl. students. Also use the Search function on that forum for ā€˜Internationalā€™ for more threads. This is the Number One FA question asked by Intl. students, so you will find past questions. Remember, any information you find here is just the start, you then need to go to the college websites for current information AND particularly for information for transfer students as most of the comments will be concerning fr admissions policies.

If you need significant aid, you should take a gap year and reapply as a freshman. Transfer admissions is difficult. International admissions is difficult. Getting aid as a transfer is difficult. Which means that the likelihood of you getting the aid you need as an international transfer is only slightly better than impossible. It really, truly, is that hard.

If you have not yet done so, contact the EducationUSA office in Nepal: https://www.educationusa.info/Kathmandu</a> The counselors there are the true experts on helping students from your country find good places to study in the US. They will be able to tell you if anyone like you had been admitted recently and has received the kind of financial aid that you need.

The problem is that I have already taken a gap year and unfortunately didnā€™t get in any colleges despite of my decent stats. So, I was contemplating on starting a college here(as a precaution given that if I donā€™t get a college next year) and applying for the next year. In spite of starting a college here and completing one year, can I apply as a freshman next year instead of a transfer applicant. Is that allowed? if yes, do you have any advice for me?

Almost every college and university in the US will consider you to be a transfer applicant if you will have finished a year of university-level studies before you enroll. If you need significant financial aid, and you are determined to study in the US, your best option is to take another gap year and try again.

However I do not recommend that you do that. I recommend that you take a long hard look at your options in your own country and find a good place to study there instead.

I will go one step further than hm1: EVERY US college will consider you a transfer applicant if you have completed a year of full time post-HS college coursework.

it depends, i got 30k last year from a small LAC but chose not to go due to its location

What I mean is, I want to apply as a first-year instead of a transfer despite a year in college. I hope thatā€™s allowed.

^No itā€™s not allowed, Iā€™m sorry if I didnā€™t make that perfectly clear in my post #11.

But please, donā€™t take my word for it, go to ANY college website and read who applys as a fr and who as a transfer applicant.

I had 3 gap years, and got in. But I applied only my last gap year.
Also, think carefully before taking those gap years. I was lucky and built a resume for myself. But then I got to college and was older than almost everyone around.
Donā€™t regret taking that time off for a second.

Would you be kind and tell me what you did different the time you got in compared to the previous years?
I believe you definitely added more extra-curricular involvements, but what other changes did you bring to your application, forced or otherwise?
Your experience will definitely help me.

Thanks a lot.

As I said, I applied only in my last gap year.
