Transfer Question

When applying for colleges, I originally applies to MSU as a backup. I was accepted and offered quite a bit in scholarships. I ended up choosing to go to a school out of state that is just below ivy level. After a year at the school, I am highly considering transferring. I am majoring in theatre here, but would probably choose to change my major upon transferring. Would this force me to go to school longer? Many of the subjects I have taken courses in do not show up on the MSU website, so I am worried that these credits may not transfer even though I am technically transferring "down". I have a 3.9 GPA though. Would there be any chance of getting good scholarships trying to apply to MSU the second time? One of the many reasons I would like to transfer is for more financial stability.

I have no idea if they give transfer students merit-based scholarships, definitely look into that/inquire around. But I would say on average MSU takes most classes for credit. You might have to take a couple extra classes but it really depends. If the courses you have taken aren’t listed on the msu transfer equivalency site there is some sort of process you go through where you submit the syllabus of the classes you took (or something of the sort) and then they check to see if the course matches up with something we have at MSU. Otherwise it might just go for general credit. Definitely look into it before you decide to transfer right away

They do have a few scholarships for transfers, I looked into the CC transfer scholarship once. They do have others too.

Transfer scholarships are quite difficult to get- but it doesn’t hurt to try.

Why would you have to change your major?

Changing my major is one of the reasons I am considering transferring. I want to study Hopitality/Hotel Management.

That makes sense. For that major, you might want to look at outside scholarships, too.

Why for that major specifically?

Because it’s a rather unique major and it would be worth looking into scholarships for it.

Oh, I see. Thanks. If I am transferring from Northwestern to MSU, should the majority of my credits transfer? There really aren’t many of them listed on the transfer credit guide from MSU, and some are slightly specialized theatre courses. I didn’t take an introduction level writing course, but took a required theatre course that acted as my freshman seminar where we wrote an eight page research paper. I am just worried about how these credits will transfer since they aren’t the usual. I’m sure most of this can’t be answered until I make my decision and contact the school I just really don’t want to have another year to do if I do decide to transfer after this year.

I would assume most would transfer. The reason they’re probably not in the system is that I doubt we have a lot of transfers from highly ranked schools like Northwestern.

Thanks for being so helpful! I am slightly worried that if I do transfer I may have to go to school a fifth year which would be worse than sticking it out here, but I guess I will figure that out when I talk to the university.

Could somebody possibly explain to me what the general requirements are for a degree? I’m going to probably call the school today, but I’d like to have some idea of what I am required to take so I can try to catch up on as much stuff as possible this year at NU so I could go in with the new major at MSU
